Episode 1
Episode 1 of The Mire: Millenium begins with Anna posing as a sex worker to catch a trucker who has been illegally smuggling spirits. The trucker is taken into custody, but the situation escalates when a group of armed men arrive at the scene. They immediately open fire on Anna and the other cops.
One of the men tries to drive away with the truck, but Anna hunts them down with her rifle. Unfortunately, she is shot in the process and is told to spend at least a week in the hospital before returning to the field.
The scene shifts, and we see Piotr having a heart-to-heart with Wanda, who reveals her plans to spend time with Kitka, her friend. We also learn that Piotr has taken a hiatus from his investigating job following the events of the first two seasons.
Back at the station, Mika’s investigation hits a snag due to a lack of an interpreter. After finding one, they question the victim, who warns them that someone is in dire need of help, and without it, they will die. The woman doesn’t reveal anything else and just keeps begging Mika and the police chief to save “them.”
In the dense forest, Joanna meets the new prosecutor, Lesniak, and Matwiejska, his new assessor. Joanna leads them to the investigation tent, where a table is covered with the remains of a dead woman. The body was found in a pit, and the cause of death was revealed to be a gunshot wound to the back of the skull.
Lesniak believes the body dates back to World War II, but Joanna disagrees. In the press release, Lesniak announces to the media that the body belongs to a Polish woman who was killed by a German rifle, possibly by a German soldier during the Second World War. The press release prompts Kocioł to call a meeting with Witold.
Kocioł also takes out a letter he has been hiding, addressed to Witold Wącynz. It seems the manager knows something about the body found. This is further hinted at when a middle-aged woman asks him about it on the night of his birthday. However, the manager doesn’t reveal anything, saying it doesn’t matter anymore.
At the same party, Mika encounters Marian Hanys, a gangster or businessman known for supplying girls to high-paying clients. Marian offers Mika a job with good pay, but Mika isn’t interested and instead asks about the Romanian girl, to which Marian responds that he doesn’t deal with Romanian girls.
Witold arrives at the hotel to meet the manager, only to find him upside down in a pot of boiling water, like a lobster. As the body is being taken away for autopsy, Witold inquires Mika about a certain letter, and Mika shrugs him off, saying he doesn’t know what he is talking about. When Piotr confronts Witold and asks him about his presence at the Centrum Hotel, Witold simply responds that he was there to pay his respects to the manager.
However, this prompts Witold to recall his past, a time when both he and the manager were young and not fragile. Back then, people knew the manager as Kocioł, who worked at the Centrum Hotel as a server. During one of his shifts, Kocioł noticed a woman with a peculiar necklace, and he couldn’t keep his eyes away from it. If you haven’t realized it yet, this is the same necklace that was found on the body of the Polish woman discovered by the cops.
The Episode Review
In its third season, the show once again captivates us from the get-go with its enigmatic storyline. The question of the woman’s identity looms large—could she be Else Koepke, Witold’s former love interest? If so, who could have been responsible for her murder?
Joanna’s theory makes the case even more mysterious, suggesting the woman might not have been killed by a German soldier. Regardless, one thing is certain: this season has already hooked us, and we can’t wait to dig into the coming episodes.
