The Enemy Within
The Mallorca season 3 episode 8 starts with Miranda and Max working on a case. They are dealing with a sniper who is shooting at guests at an elite party. Unfortunately, Max is shot during the shootout between the sniper and the police.
We circle back to 36 hours earlier before Max took a bullet in his back. He and Miranda were bickering on their way to meet the boyfriend of a missing woman. The boyfriend, Matteo, was worried that his journalist girlfriend, Empar, is missing. He shows Max and Miranda around the house and implies that Empar is working on interviewing an environmental tycoon, Alexander Sunberg. Empar had been getting threats and Matteo worries she is in real danger.
Do Max and Miranda find Empar?
They visit Alexander, and he quickly explains that he had an interview with Empar. He is quite open about how Empar was looking for dirt on him. He felt offended that Empar questioned the cars his son uses. As Alexander is big on protecting the environment, Empar found it ironic that his son drives quite an expensive sports car.
Upon asking the son, Ellis, a few questions, he denies meeting Empar. Based on Ellis’s body language, Max and Miranda tail him. While they are at it, they discover someone else is keeping an eye on Ellis. The person in question turns out to be Empar. She is not dead, just working undercover to find out what Ellis is up to.
After the usual push and pull, Miranda and Max convince Empar to trust them. She reveals that she thinks Ellis and his dad are planning an assassination attempt. She says that Ellis was meeting with an eco-tourist, Diego. She believes Diego is acting as the middleman between the Sundberg and the assassin. She says that the assassin is known as The Judge. Miranda asks Empar to remain in police custody, but the latter sneaks out later
Who is The Judge and does he succeed in his mission?
A random man arrives in Mallorca under a disguise. Ines reaches out to Interpol and they confirm that they have been trying to arrest The Judge. However, they are not sure if Empar’s sources are reliable. DI Turner, a former acquaintance of Miranda, mocks her and demands that they verify the information before they involve Interpol. Miranda is ticked off since she and Turner are competitive and have bad blood between them
They head back to question Ellis on his ties to Diego. Ellis and Alexander bring in their lawyer and insist that Ellis met with Diego to convince him to join their call to save their environment. Empar waits for Miranda and Max to leave the station before sneaking out. They use her phone to trace her, but she plays hardball, insisting she wants to finish what she started.
She tells the police that she believes Ellis might be targeting his dad and that she thinks the attack will go down during the Sunberg’s big eco-party. She also convinces Miranda and Max to let her investigate the case and meet with her source. Unfortunately, she and her source are killed in a car bomb and Miranda blames herself for their death.
After Empar and her source die, DI Turner arrives in Mallorca and takes over the case. He demands that Max and Miranda hand over the case. The events of the case start getting overwhelming for Miranda. She asks Turner if he is being a prick because she turned him down once. He denies it and mocks her career path. His words get to Miranda and she takes her frustration out on Max. They both say some hurtful words to each other and have an intense fight.
Meanwhile, Turner and the new team arrest the mysterious man who arrived in town under disguise. At the same time, Miranda, Max and the local cops provide security at the Sundberg’s party where the elites have come together to donate to the cause. One of the top attendees is the famous actress, Lila Beck. The team is relieved when they learn that The judge was arrested. Miranda and Max confront Ellis and he confesses that they had planned a staged attack to gain more sympathy for their cause. He refers to the assassin as a female and Miranda and Max realise they have the wrong guy in custody. He is not the assassin, but just her assistant.
Miranda and Max also discover that the target is Lila and move to try to stop the attack. Unfortunately, The Judge is already on the scene and Miranda interrupts her before she takes her shot. A gunfight ensues and Max gets shot in the commotion. Luckily, he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Miranda chases down the female assassin and kills her during the confrontation.
How Does The Mallorca season 3 end?
After solving the case, Max and Miranda make up. They realise life is too short to be on bad terms with the people they care about. The show ends with them watching the sunset and happily bickering. For a brief moment, we thought they would kiss, but I guess that is not happening!
The Episode Review
The Mallorca Files is one of those easy police procedural dramas to watch. They tried to amp up the stakes in this finale, but it still fell flat. So far, the season has been light with little intense moments. We have been focusing mostly on whether Max will tell Miranda about his feelings for her. We thought there might be a chance that his near-death experience would invoke some feelings in Miranda, but we were wrong. The will they or won’t they plotline is now getting boring. The writers should decide if we will see these two get together romantically or not. After three seasons, we need an answer or a chance to move on.
