The Madness – Season 1 Episode 3 “Discord” Recap & Review

Discord

Episode 3 of The Madness starts with Muncie’s family shocked over him firing the gun into the air. Elena is pissed that he’s done this right in front of Demetrius and she’s concerned that he’s losing control. Demetrius even offers him some weed to calm down but Muncie snaps at his son when he does so.

Muncie leaves in the middle of the night and decides to resolve this sooner rather than later. He shows at a gun commune to get answers where the Discord gang are hanging out. Unfortunately, he’s also absent while Philly PD show at Elena’s place, asking questions. She’s keeping her mouth shut for now, but it’s also not a good look for Muncie.

Muncie pretends to be a reporter working on a piece about the far left’s push to destigmatize guns. He wants an interview with Ant and even has his CNN badge to get himself through the doors. Muncie hands over the gun and his phone, and is invited inside to meet Yang, the defacto leader, of the group.

Yang explains that their beliefs stem from having as much right to arm themselves as the officers of the law. Yang knows all about Muncie, including how he’s been suspended by CNN after firing his gun in the air. Lying to this group is not a good move, and Muncie finds himself in the thick of it.

Muncie tells the truth about the Poconos but Yang doesn’t buy it, until his associate chirps up and reveals Ant’s associate may have been a guy called Don. He frequents a swinger’s club called Nelly’s so Muncie enlists the help of Elena to track down the guy. But that’s only after agreeing to speak to her lawyer.

The pair put on a façade and find a link to Berkeley. Before Muncie chases this further, he meets with Kwasi’s lawyer, who believes he’s in good stead right now as there’s nothing physical linking him to the murders. The trouble is, sitting around twiddling his thumbs waiting for something to come up is not going to fly if there’s proper framing going on here against Muncie.

Muncie soon learns that Don’s full name is Donald Bartholomew Sloss Jr. He was a former Green Beret until he got kicked out for bad conduct. He apparently moves from group to group causing trouble, and that includes Discord.

With a proper name and motive to go on, Muncie speaks to Franco in private. It turns out he’s investigating someone called Stu Magnusson. This man is a hedge-fund big-wig and apparently the guy who owns the cabin Simon was staying in. He could actually be the one behind this, given he has a grudge against Mark. This, linked with the death of Jennings, makes for a much bigger case than they initially thought.

Muncie meets Lucie again, and she shows off some messages between Mark and Jennings. There are a lot of mentions surrounding SM, which appears to be this Stu Magnusson guy. Well, despite Agent Franco’s insistence not to, Muncie meets Stu and threatens him.

Stu plays hardball and Muncie gives him a couple of hours to call and get this sorted. He ignores Franco’s message, telling him to go back to the motel, and instead finds himself in hot water when it’s Don, not Stu, that rings. He knows Muncie is in New York and appears to be watching him as well.

After a failed chase through the streets, Muncie is shocked when news breaks of Mark Simon’s body being found in his apartment. And with his name up all over the news, and seemingly nowhere to run, things are not looking good!

The Episode Review

So it would appear that Stu Magnusson is actually behind this in some way but how? And why? Muncie showing up and antagonizing him wasn’t the smartest move and this could be exactly why he’s being framed and news breaking around the murder.

However, there’s lots we don’t know about this case, and the mystery has been really well worked into this show thus far. The investigation surrounding these two extremist groups has been worked nicely into the main narrative, and Muncie has plenty of flaws to his character too, which is being exploited by both groups.

It’s still unknown right now exactly how all of this ties together, and why Muncie is being framed, but we’ll have to wait and see where this one goes next to find out!
