The Little Mermaid
The highly anticipated live-action remake of Disney’s beloved animated musical is almost here.
Will the movie be any good? We certainly hope so but as the last Disney remake to hit our screens – the disappointing Pinocchio – was as wooden as the make-believe puppet, there is a small chance that this could sink without a trace on release.
Don’t let us dash your hopes for a decent movie though. From what we have seen from the trailer, this revamp of The Little Mermaid actually looks pretty good so this could be a lot better than Pinocchio and some of the Disney remakes that have failed to match the quality of the original animated movies.

What is The Little Mermaid about?
The story will likely follow the events of the animated movie so if you’re a fan of that Disney classic, you probably know the story of The Little Mermaid already.
If you need a reminder (or if you have never seen that earlier release), here is the official synopsis from Walt Disney Studio.
“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
Of course, that’s the story. But what about the songs? Will the new movie include songs from the 1989 movie? Thankfully, yes, although two of them – Kiss The Girl and Poor Unfortunate Souls – have been revised to make them more suitable (i.e. less sexist) for modern audiences.
Here’s the song list:
- Part Of Your World
- Daughters of Triton
- Fathoms Below
- Under The Sea
- Les Poissons
- Wild Uncharted Waters
- For the First Time
- Kiss The Girl
- The Scuttlebutt
When is The Little Mermaid being released?
The movie will be released in theatres on May 26, 2023, in the UK, US, and most other countries around the world.
Who are the stars of The Little Mermaid?
Playing everyone’s favourite mermaid is Halle Bailey, the singer/songwriter and actress who is perhaps most famous for her musical accomplishments than her acting work. Expect The Little Mermaid to change all that as we expect Hollywood will come calling at her door more often if the movie is a big success.
Also in the cast is the wonderful Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids) as the evil sea witch Ursula, and Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men), as King Triton, the ruler of Antarctica.
The cast list also includes:
- Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian
- Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder
- Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle
- Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric
- Art Malik as Sir Grimsby
- Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina
Who is the director of The Little Mermaid?
American director Rob Marshall is at the helm of the new movie. His previous directing credits include Mary Poppins Returns and Into The Woods, two Disney releases that scored highly with critics and audiences, so The Little Mermaid could well be the next big hit for the House of Mouse.

Hey Julieta. thanks for getting in touch. The expected release date is the 26th of May in both 2D and 3D versions. Should you miss it on the big screen, the movie will be coming to Disney+ (probably at the end of the summer). Let us know what you think of the movie!
I wondered if the movie is still scheduled for release in June and July of 2023? Hey there! My friends and I are trying to plan a movie night, but we’re not sure when the best time would be. We were thinking either June or July, but we don’t know the official date of the movie yet. Plus, we need to coordinate with the girls’ schedules too. Any suggestions and we want to watch it in 3D in Lodi Ca.?
