The Lincoln Lawyer – Season 3 Episode 5 Recap & Review

What Happens In Victorville

Episode 5 of Lincoln Lawyer season 3 begins with De Marco claiming that he’s here to see Sly. He brings up how Mexicans have found a loophole around the legal system. You see, in Mexico there’s no jurisdiction to have a teen tried as an adult. So the cartel basically recruit teenagers as assassins, known as sicarios. Once they’re out at 18, they’re free to go.

De Marco does not want Hector to go free, given he’s notorious and has killed a bunch of people when he was 16. He was freed when he was 18 so De Marco has a definite grudge against him. Before he leaves, he tells Mickey that he’s around so if he has any additional questions, he should just come and ask. This is, of course, a warning in disguise.

Having heard this, Mickey decides to take on Hector Moya’s case. That way they can kill two birds with one stone and find the connection between him and Gloria properly. They’ll set up De Marco as the suspect but… is this really the right play? The others in the office aren’t so sure but Mickey believes they owe it to both Julian and Gloria to get to the bottom of all this.

In the midst of this, Mickey hears about the tragic murder from episode 4 and understands why Andrea is blocking her out. Lorna thinks he should call her. However, Andy shows back up at work where Deborah’s father shows at the office. She is, unfortunately, compounded with guilt over what’s happening.

She blames herself for it and that night, she opens up to Mickey. She blames herself for not calling Deborah and revealing the Cruz waiver that was confirmed a few episodes back.

Cisco stakes out De Marco’s ex wife, Amber, who was previously busted by the DEA. She was selling drugs on the side and wandering around with a pretty expensive handbag. She’s also under De Marco’s thumb. You see, this shady DEA agent has been using his badge to get people in a jam and then forces them to do his dirty work as a way of blackmailing them.

This is looking more and more like De Marco being the true culprit, despite our initial reservations. But helping a man like Hector Moya? That’s a tough one.

Mickey shows up at the prison and meets with Sly Sr. Hector came to Sly, given he’s the only lawyer behind bars, and he swears that the cops planted the gun on him. Gloria and Trina were both seeing Hector as their client.

As they talk, Mickey realizes that this subpoena got Gloria killed and they’ve basically kicked a hornet’s nest over by getting involved in all this the way they have. Mickey offers a lifeline, knowing Jr isn’t up to it, and eventually he concedes.

Mickey is allowed to head in and see Hector, who happens to be working in the kitchen. Six months back he thought about killing Mickey but never did it. However, he does admit that he never trashed his home, given the rattlesnake is a little too showy and it’s not his style.

Mickey wants to strike a deal, throwing Sly Sr under the bus and pointing out that Sly Jr. doesn’t know his arse from his elbow and so Mickey is his best bet. Hector agrees, and the pair decide to work together.

Andrea decides she needs to leave for a bit and get back in the right headspace, while Lorna and Izzy find a connection from some murders to De Marco. The DEA consulted on a double murder in the Valley where Bishop worked 10 years ago.

However, things take a nasty turn when a truck slams into them on the road back from the prison, causing their car to crash and tip several times. It’s a complete mess. And even worse, Eddie dies in the crash that follows.

The Episode Review

This, ladies and gentlemen, is why you always wear your seatbelt. The ending is shocking and it’s clear that this is a dangerous case and those behind it are not messing about.

Whoever is responsible for this – whether it be the DEA or shadier forces – clearly don’t want Mickey to dig any deeper into this case. However, this is inevitably going to have the adverse effect, as Mickey is going to be more determined than ever to bring those responsible to justice. It certainly raises the stakes for this one and makes everything that much more dramatic too.

With Andrea needing to take some time out, and Mickey forced to juggle both Glory and Hector’s cases, will they manage to turn it around and win?
