The Legend of Vox Machina – Season 3 Episode 8 “Siege & Silence” Recap & Review

Siege & Silence

In The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Episode 8, a flashback shows Vox Machina’s first meeting with Percy. It involved them breaking him out of prison, ending a period in which he was alone in the world.

In the present day, Whitestone grieves the loss of Percy. Scanlan arrives, just missing the funeral.

Vex cries at the feet of his body, lamenting that she wasn’t strong enough to tell him she loved him back. She tells Vax her love must ruin everything it touches.

Vax knocks on Keyleth’s door to apologize for running away. He’s scared of the future, but he’s realized that he wants to live it, not run away from it. They kiss.

After they sleep together, Vax wakes up to a vision from the Matron of Ravens. Raishan finds him in the middle of the night to try and convince him to fight Thordak. She tells him it’s time he knew the truth about Thordak–that he was the one who burned their hometown.

He later finds Vex trying to leave but stops her with the news he just learned. He says she can’t let her grief freeze her again. It’s time they avenged both their mother and Percy.

Pike reassures Scanlan he’s not to blame for not being there. She then notices he wrote a song for Kaylie.

Thordak’s whole nest will hatch soon, so they all agree to hasten their plans. Grog wonders whether they could gather an army from the friends they’ve made. Keyleth convinces the Ashari to help, Grog gets Groon on their side, and Whitestone prepares its soldiers. Vax tries to enlist Kash and Zahra, but they decline.

Meanwhile, Vex makes her way to her father in Syngorn. She asks him to admit that Thordak killed her mom. She’d always believed she and Vax were the reason she was sent away and the reason she died. She now blames him for turning his back on his children. She begs him to help her now.

Scanlan finds Pike singing the song he wrote for Kaylie. He says he’s not going to show the song to her, as he can’t be a good father and a good part of the team.

Syngorn’s soldiers arrive at Whitestone to bolster their forces. The Ashari and soldiers will fight the dragons head-on. Raishan informs them of a back entrance into Thordak’s lair that Vox Machina can sneak through.

They fly off, quickly having to evade dragons that circle the entrances. They find the secret entrance, but it’s freshly sealed. It starts crumbling.

The ground trembles underneath the front lines. Thordak approaches him, killing many of them in one fiery breath.

The Episode Review

Did Raishan truly betray the group? On the one hand, it’s hard to believe her relationship to Thordak is strong, and we know the Cinder King doesn’t even trust her. She’s definitely suspicious, however. She did say Vox Machina would be her enemies. And anyway, why choose now to share Thordak’s role in the Vessars’ mother’s death? She’s been planning something, and I’m not sure it’s to Vox Machina’s benefit.

All in all, what a thrilling, emotional episode! Vex and her complex emotions really tether the action to a heartfelt place. Already plagued by trauma connected to her mother and Percy, she now risks the lives of her father and his people. Can she bear it? If she and Vox Machina even survive, that is?
