Premonitions, fatal encounters, and shocking twists—Netflix’s mind-bending thriller The Last Night at Tremore Beach sports it all. The Spanish series is based on the novel by Mikel Santiago and directed by Oriol Paulo.
The story follows award-winning composer and pianist Alex, who leaves his life of glitz and glamour behind to settle in the small seaside town of Tremore, hoping to compose in peace after his turbulent divorce. While staying in the town, he builds a familial relationship with his friendly and inviting neighbors, Leo and Maria, along with a budding romance with a hostel owner, Judy. It isn’t until Alex survives a lightning strike that ominous visions begin plaguing him, alerting him to an impending doom coming his way.
Narratively, The Last Night at Tremore Beach is a complicated puzzle; yet the editing and storytelling make it interesting to keep note of the little details that eventually fit together perfectly, leading us to an “Aha” moment when the entire plot comes together to reveal one of the most exhilarating moments in the finale.
One major drawback of the show, though, is its horribly slow pacing, which might lead many viewers to swap the show for their beauty sleep. This plague of slow pacing remains throughout, and during the slower episodes, it becomes a test of patience to get through it all. However, if one perseveres and successfully reaches the last two episodes, the show will reward you with entertaining twists and an uninterrupted anticipation of what’s to come next.
Another minor drawback is that, although many puzzle pieces fit together to lead to the point of exhilaration in the finale, there are quite a few details for which the show provides no explanation. Without spoiling the show, one such example is Alex’s vision of Judy tied up inside the piano, which is conveniently forgotten. There are more such instances, but we cannot mention them for fear of spoiling it for you!
Moving on to the characters, there are significant episodes dedicated to Alex and Judy. While it makes sense for Alex’s character to feature an entire episode, it does not for Judy’s, since her painful history doesn’t lead us anywhere meaningful in terms of the show’s vision, apart from hinting at a deepening relationship between Alex and Judy.
However, this relationship never has much time to breathe after we pass the halfway mark in the show. There seems to be a divide between the show’s priorities, with its focus on characters in the first half and on the plot in the second, which makes the show a bit unnecessarily long and, coupled with the slow pacing, tiring.
Interestingly though, the last two episodes make up for most of our difficulties, as the mystery unravels into something that, although initially predictable, ends with a massive plot twist!
