Netflix have showcased some bizarre cases over the years but perhaps one of the more unusual stems from their latest, The Kings of Tupelo. Between letters laced with ricin, across to organ harvesting and conspiratorial agents, this bonkers case is laid out for all to see in this three-part docu-series.
At its core, the show centers on two individuals – Paul Kevin Curtis and Everett Dutschke. Set deep in the heart of Tupelo Mississippi, Kevin works as an Elvis Presley impersonator while Everett is a martial arts instructor.
With a keen eye for conspiracy theories, Kevin appears to uncover a strange organ harvesting ring, but he soon butts heads with Everett over this. It doesn’t take long though for Kevin to find himself in over his head as ricin-laced letters are sent to three public officials, including the President, eventually leading back to Kevin who is subsequently arrested. However, Kevin is convinced he’s being framed and soon another suspect comes into the fold…
The three episodes work well to flesh out the conflict between the two men, including how the bizarre and coincidental moments between them eventually led to a full-on feud that could have ended very badly.
The show has a compelling tone and it’s helped along by the editing too, which is excellent across the board. The talking head interviews with Kevin, along with Everett’s colleagues, people in the community and officials all help to give a broad overview of this feud and how it escalated.
This quirkiness extends over to the soundtrack as well, although if there’s one gripe here, it’s that the music choices are a tad distracting. However, take that critique with a pinch of salt as it may just be a personal preference to be fair!
The series is certainly enjoyable and the episodes are definitely long enough to keep you engaged throughout. Each range from 55-75 minutes, and there’s enough meat to this story that you won’t find yourself clock watching. Nor would you want to, given what’s here!
To give much more away about The Kings of Tupelo: A Southern Crime Saga would be a disservice to this series. If you’ve never heard of this case, you absolutely should check it out. It really is stranger than fiction, and the tale boasts plenty of twists and turns. The interviews are revealing and the archival footage interwoven into the story really well. This one’s another must-watch!
