After a lot of controversy, Netflix has finally released the four-part documentary series, The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth, that narrates the crime case from 2012, The Sheena Bora Murder Case. The documentary details the complicated lives of Indrani Mukerjea and Peter Mukerjea. Businesswoman and Media consultant, Indrani Mukerjea (born Pori Bora) is the prime accused in the murder of her first-born daughter – Sheena Bora.

Throughout the four episodes of this Netflix docuseries, we see the convoluted relationship between Sheena and Indrani as well as the complex family tree of the Bora-Mukerjea family. There are questions about Indrani’s relationship with Sheena who was initially perceived as Indrani’s sister. Other shocking revelations about Sheena’s paternity, as well as her relationship with her stepbrother, makes this documentary as scandalous as the makers expect it to be.

The show features testimonies from Indrani herself, the prime accused in Sheena’s murder. In the final moments of the documentary, it’s revealed that the other people involved in the case as well as Sheena’s fiancé, Rahul Mukerjea, refused to participate in the docuseries. Other than Indrani, we also hear testimonies from Indrani’s lawyer as well as her two children – Mekhail and Vidhie.

The documentary was initially met with pushback after the Central Bureau of Investigation of India (CBI) filed a lawsuit against the release of the show. The Indrani Mukerjea Story was finally released after it concluded that the show is not trying to sway the viewers into believing Indrani is inculpable for the murder of her daughter.

The show, on the contrary, gives viewers all the more reason to doubt Indrani and her motive behind Sheena’s alleged murder. The documentary mentions details of the case, all of which have already been floating on the internet. The nature of Indrani’s relationship with Sheena, as well as her two other children, further exposes the dark reality of her motherhood.

It is ironic how Indrani’s two living children, Mekhail and Vidhie, do not call her “Mom” or “Mother” but address her by her first name. We also hear testimonies from Mekhail about how he and Sheena felt abandoned by their mother who earned all the fame in the world after marrying Peter. The documentary highlights Indrani’s absentee parenting and her narcissism.

We see Indrani interrupting her legal advisors during their testimonies which proves how territorial and controlling she can get. We also see her trying to vehemently deny the fact that the body identified was Sheena’s. Moreover, the documentary also showcases how Indrani refuses to believe that Sheena is even dead, even to this day.

The docu-series also tries to shed some light on the dark reality of the affluent people living in South Mumbai. While it is still unknown if Indrani really killed her daughter, the Netflix documentary, The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth aims to help the viewers see through Indrani’s self-obsession and narcissism.

This is a great weekend watch that makes you think about motherhood as well as the convoluted relationships in blended families.
