The First Omen Plot Summary
With so many remakes, sequels, and whatnot, it was a given that The Omen (1976) would receive one. Thankfully, Arkasha Stevenson does a great job and turns The First Omen (2024) into an interesting and unsettling prequel. More than that, it can stand on its own while also making people more eager to check the original.
It follows Margaret, a young soon-to-be nun, who’s going to Rome to take her vows. She joins many other nuns at the Vizzardeli Orphanage, but quickly realizes they mistreat one of the girls there, Carlita. Seeing her past self in the child, she wishes to help her. However, she suddenly sees herself in a conspiracy to bring the antichrist to Earth. A splinter group of the Catholic Church believes that in doing so they’ll regain people’s interest in God and their institution.
Who is the cursed child?
The church plans on creating a cursed child who’ll birth the antichrist. The kid is the spawn of a devout Christian and a jackal, and later she will be impregnated by the same beast to, then, bring the evil antichrist.
Margaret spends almost the entirety of the movie concerned about Carlita’s treatment and well-being, making the girl a solid candidate for that. When she finds out about the conspiracy and the cursed child, her concerns only grow stronger. Also, as weird things often happen around the child, it’s hard to believe she isn’t the one.
Unsurprisingly, Carlita is, indeed, the cursed child. But only one of them. Margaret also is cursed and she has been fostered by the church all this time only to fulfil their disturbing objective. To make matters worse, she’s already pregnant by the time she finds that out. So, Margaret’s fate is sealed before she can do anything to prevent it.
How does The First Omen end?
The church’s splinter group kidnaps Margaret and forces her to give birth to the antichrist, who needs to be a boy. To their surprise, she has twins, both a boy and a girl.
They get the boy as he’s the priority, and plan on killing the girl later. To put an end to their plans, Margaret kills Cardinal Lawrence, one of the responsible, with a scalpel and gets her baby back. When she tries to kill him too, she hesitates, giving a chance for a nun to stab her in the back. While they get away with everything, she is left there to burn in a fire with her daughter. Luckily, Carlita goes to her rescue and saves both Margaret and the girl.
The ending shows us a quick lead-up to the first The Omen movie. We see an American diplomat, Robert Thorn, having his child switched with the young antichrist without his knowledge. Later, while Carlita and Margaret enjoy a happy dinner with the baby, they receive a surprising visit. Father Brennan, a good priest who tried to help them before, comes to tell them some news. The evil group knows they are alive, and now the boy has a name: Damien.
