The Fire Hunter – Season 2 Episode 10 Recap & Review

Lamplight

Episode 10 of The Fire Hunter Season 2 begins with Akira and Temari confronting Hibari and another canine. Koushi, Kanata, and Touko join them. Hibari tells them he only summoned one person and doesn’t want to deal with the others. Ruri arrives and explains how she was the one who made the forest talk a couple of episodes ago.

Koushi tells Ruri the gods are nothing without the humans. Ruri agrees and tells Koushi that the divine clans hoped no human would realize the truth about the humans’ connections with the gods. Ruri reminds Akira that Tokohanahime forged the sickles that fire hunters use to kill flame fiends. Also, without those tools, Ruri says people can’t harvest fire from the fiends.

Ruri explains the divine clans had superpowers necessary to keep humans alive and maintain peace. Afterward, she says the capital’s factory district kept Tayurahime alive. Touko agrees and opens up about Koushi’s hypothesis shared in episode 9. Ruri finds this statement fascinating and Ruri believes this is why Hibari took an interest in Koushi.

Koushi reminds Ruri that the gods can’t exist without the humans. Suddenly, numerous gods who were sealed away in those canisters from episode 9 speak up. They inform our heroes that they shouldn’t have been able to set foot in this area. While the gods ramble about power, their connection to the Lady Goddess, and the humans’ roles in their plan,  Hibari’s canine fights Temari and Kanata.

Hibari plans to fight Akira. Touko steps in. Even though Akira tells her not to fight, Touko says if Kanata’s going to fight, she will too. Koushi states how this world is covered in misery. He doesn’t love how everyone a part of this world has to clean up this world’s former humans’ mistakes. Touko senses someone’s presence. Hibari tells Akira to put her sickle down. He promises her that En (his canine) won’t attack her or the others anymore.

Tayurahime arrives. Hibari bows in front of her and informs the others of her duties in this world. He states that she’s the sister goddess to Tokohanahime and the twin sister of the Flickering Flame. Touko approaches Tayurahime and asks her why she looks like a decrepit humanoid. Suddenly, the Flickering Flame (who still has Kira as her vessel) arrives and tells Tayurahime not to move.

Tayurahime welcomes the Flickering Flame home and Koushi and Akira are speechless. Essentially, Tayurahime finds a way to control Touko, using her as a temporary vessel to communicate with the Flickering Flame. Tayurahime says her time in this world has expired. However, she has resolved to have her life prolonged so she can serve as the Lady Goddess.

Moreover, Tayurahime says she resided in this domain for a long time because she wanted to wait for the Flickering Flame to appear before her. Also, Tayurahime reveals that the Flickering Flame was birthed to resemble her. The Flickering Flame says she was launched into the sky to watch over the world and to save people. Unfortunately, she laments at the fact that she can only watch the world crumble.

She reflects on how humans held angst toward each other and how their hatred toward each other made them equal. The Flickering Flame releases Kira from her control. Touko rushes over to Kira and stares at the Flickering Flame. She’s shocked that the Flickering Flame doesn’t have the same build as before. Hibari says the form Touko’s familiar with is a false one.

The Flickering Flame tells Koushi that Kira is still alive. Touko believes the Flickering Flame she met at the Millenial Comet wasn’t a farce. She believes she is experiencing some essence of sadness. Akira yells at Hibari and can’t believe they worshipped a marionette and mud-like deity all this time. Hibari tells Akira to hush up because she wouldn’t understand what type of pressure they’ve endured.

Hibari threatens to kill Akira if she belittles either goddess again. The Flickering Flame says she wants to end it all because today’s humans resemble those of the past. Also, she doesn’t mind being hunted as long as Touko does it. The Flickering Flame says Touko reminds her of the humans she wanted to save in the past but couldn’t. She admits that she can’t save the world or Tayura’s life.

Touko says she’s not willing to accept that fate. She feels if she’s like the humans of the past then the others should be like them too. The Flickering Flame tells Touko she doesn’t resemble anyone. Suddenly, the Flickering Flame’s former appearance glows before her. Also, Touko’s sickle starts glowing, too. After we receive an insightful monologue, Touko grabs the glowing sickle.

The Flickering Flame lends Touko a hand. With their combined effort, Touko murders the Flickering Flame with the sickle. Ruri grants Touko the title of the new lord of the fire hunters. Hibari promises not to interfere with the Flickering Flame’s choice. While Tayurahime crumbles, Ruri mentions that Touko is the new ruler of this world.

Touko meets with Akira, Kun, and Kaho somewhere. Akira tells Kaho that every village will be assigned a fire hunter. Each fire hunter will teach the villagers of their ways. Kaho wonders if Touko will teach her villagers how to make paper. Akira disagrees and says Touko will return to this area once she returns to her village and becomes its fire hunter.

Although Touko is the new lord of the fire hunters, Akira promises to fill in for her in the meantime. Akira says they’ve gathered many crews. Also, she says they’ve earned Kiri and her remaining treefolks support. She says they’ll begin experimenting with the bugs Kun found soon. Meanwhile, Koushi, Kira, and Hinako visit Kira’s father and mother’s graves. Koushi feels Kanata will return to the capital someday despite leaving with Touko.

Touko visits Hotaru and returns to the Papermaker Village. While several villagers welcome Touko home, the season closes with a colorful depiction of someone in the sky.

The Episode Review

As many have expected, Touko became the new lord of the fire hunters by the series’s conclusion. While this finale doesn’t offer the best visuals and animation, some will love that the anime concluded on a cheery note. At the same time, we should’ve received one more chapter with all the characters who survived the dreadful excursion between the gods, humans, and Spiders.

Whether it be a scene where Touko finds a cure for Akari’s eyes or a time-skip-centric chapter depicting her activities in her adult years, it would’ve been great to have one final chapter that was pure comfort.

Regardless, fans will be satisfied that no one, besides Tayurahime and the Flickering Flame, perished in this chapter. Although most of the cast didn’t receive the finest development imaginable, seeing someone like Akira or Koushi dying in this episode would’ve hurt audiences.

Overall, this was an okay conclusion of The Fire Hunter. Although the series lost many viewers along the way, due to its unsatisfying visuals and slow-burn nature, viewers who kept up with it obtained a fine experience.
