Episode 6
Episode 6 of The Fiery Priest Season 2 begins with Gu, Hae-il and Ja-yeong beating up the thugs at the ball boys’ hideout. Capelin escapes but our Gudam crew takes the drugs which is worth 15 billion.
The cop, Jin-su refuses to listen to Chae Do-u when he tries to report the ship thugs. Instead, Dean Lee sets up a disciplinary hearing to expel him. Desperate, Chae asks Hae-il to check on Mrs. Song. Both are shocked when Hae-il finds her dead body.
At dinner, Hong-sik continues to make heart eyes at Kyung-sun and outright asks if she is single. But she is not interested and does her best to politely reject him. After she leaves, Du-heon and Hong-sik learn about Hae-il’s raid and Captain Lee’s public humiliation.
Du-heon wants to take out Hae-il but Hong-sik still wants to keep him around as he is amused by the priest’s antics. He isn’t worried about the lost drugs either as he tells the thugs to resume packing.
As for Song’s case, Du-heon tells Jin-su to wrap it up quietly and so the Uma cops refuse to do an autopsy. Hae-il is furious as he points out that Song had foam on her mouth, smelled like chemicals and had suspicious powder in her nails. Refusing to give up, he storms to the ship.
At the same time, Chief Prosecutor Park bugs Du-heon’s car and sends a Seoul Task Force to raid the ship. Unfortunately, they don’t find anything except medicinal ingredients confusing Hae-il who is watching from nearby.
Hong-sik quietly watches and later reveals to Du-heon that they had released a gas which messes with sniffer dogs’ sense of smell. After finding the decoy, the task force didn’t think of searching anymore and hence missed the “restricted area” containing the real drugs.
Ja-yeong is getting to know Songsak and Yo-han when Hae-il comes bearing bad news. They test the drugs taken from the ball boys and confirm his suspicions – it is the same medicinal powder.
At their wits’ end, they decide to stake out the ship. However, Hae-il has to rush to the police station when he learns the cops are hell-bent on cremating Mrs. Song’s body. He creates a scene but gets electrocuted and thrown in jail with Chae while a masked woman watches.
As for Kyung-sun, she is still being followed by a strange woman in her room because of which she hasn’t been able to sleep. Du-heon gives her a high-profile case – catching VP Park’s son red-handed while doing drugs at a club. She offers to use the kid as bait to control the VP and he is impressed as he reveals that’s how he has control over several officials.
The next morning, Dean Lee has to bail out the priests again. He is furious but Chae and Hae-il run off to the crematorium. They are late and Hae-il is upset. A funeral is held and the masked woman and the Laotian thugs both observe Hae-il.
All of this info goes back to Hong-sik who is impressed by Hae-il’s tenacity. He is distracted by an ad for a meteor shower and calls Kyung-sun to watch it with him. As usual, she deflects and rejects him.
As for Chae, he is disheartened as he heads to his disciplinary hearing. Hae-il decides to take the punishment on his behalf but turns out Dean Lee simply wanted to give Chae a one-semester suspension. Hae-il still wants to protect him and makes a deal – he can’t lose his temper for a month.
Nearby, Father Han and Sister Kim bicker as the musical is not going as planned. Ma-ri suddenly shows up for the audition. A while later, Hong-sik stops by and offers to hold a benefit at the church. But he wants Hae-il to attend which surprises Han and Kim. As they wonder what he is up to, the masked woman shows up to join the musical too.
As for our stakeout crew, it has dwindled down to Ja-yeong and Gu who notice the lizard tattoo on the Laotian thugs.
Hae-il and Kyung-sun have another rendezvous and share their updates. They wonder who signed off the Seoul Task Force followed by her telling him about Hong-sik’s crush on her. Hae-il teases her but she is not interested in Hong-sik. Onto the ship mystery, they realise the only way in is to befriend the thugs. And Hae-il has a plan.
At the police station, he had spotted a wanted poster for a criminal who looks exactly like Detective Gu albeit with a red birthmark on his cheek. The criminal also had 2 friends who look like Songsak and Yo-han, and a girlfriend. Well, Operation Doppelganger begins with the gang slapping Gu till his cheek is so red that it looks like the birthmark. He is joined by Songsak, Yo-han and Ja-yeong as they head to the ship.
That night, Hae-il prays to God for help when he gets dizzy and faints. Chief Prosecutor Park is killed. Kyung-sun sees a ghost and faints. At the end of The Fiery Priest Season 2 Episode 6, Hae-il wakes up to the Mother Mary statue burning in the yard. Hong-sik watches from the CCTV and smiles while Hae-il looks furious.
The Episode Review
The Fiery Priest Season 2 Episode 6 is less of a mid-season finale and acts more like a transition between the first and second half of the show. Most of the questions from the premiere are answered, the characters have their set roles and the overarching conflict is clear. Now we get new subplots like Hae-il learning of Hong-sik’s identity, Hong-sik falling for Kyung-sun, the Uma musical with two unlikely participants and Operation Doppelganger.
By the way, we are curious about what direction Kyung-sun’s ghost subplot is going. Despite having an ambiguous title, The Fiery Priest is far from supernatural. As a crime comedy, it is grounded in reality with the only suspension in belief being for the physical comedy. So, is Kyung-sun losing her mind? Is that ghost a real woman? And how does it tie up with the rest of the story? Questions, questions, questions…
