The Fable – Season 1 Episode 23 Recap & Review

Horn

Episode 23 of The Fable begins with Fable spotting Suzuki. Suzuki enters a silver car and Fable tells Yoko to follow Suzuki since he may lead her to Rei. Fable tells Yoko he knew about Suzuki’s RC car grenade trap and caused it to explode on purpose. Yoko follows Suzuki. Suzuki calls Rei. He tells Rei they’ll need to go with Plan B.

Meanwhile, Isaki and Kuro meet with a car seller. Fable calls Kuro and asks him to get him a fast car. Kuro tells Isaki he must borrow this seller’s car. He promises to return it once he’s done using it. Rei and Hinako go for a stroll in the forest. Meanwhile, Yoko updates Fable about her location.

Fable tells Yoko he’s waiting for Kuro to pick him up at the convenience store. He orders Yoko to pinpoint their position and wait. Kuro arrives and Fable tells him he’ll be driving this vehicle. While driving, Fable asks Kuro to get a map of the mountain pass where Suzuki and Rei are stationed.

Fable looks at the map, memorizes it, and tells Kuro he’ll likely forget about the map’s route tomorrow. Meanwhile, we learn Yoko lost Suzuki’s trail. Yoko’s currently driving through the forest. Suzuki stands in front of her and tosses a rock. Yoko abandons her vehicle because she thinks Suzuki has a grenade.

Suzuki appears behind Yoko with a gun in his hands. Suzuki tells Yoko he threw a rock. He orders Yoko to toss some of her belongings somewhere. Then, Suzuki leads Yoko somewhere but wants her to crawl toward his and Rei’s hideout. Meanwhile, Fable predicts Yoko’s been captured because she fails to respond to his calls.

Then, we return to following Rei, Suzuki, Yoko, and Hinako. Rei orders Yoko to tie herself to a tree and tells Hinako she works for Fable’s organization. Fable and Kuro arrive in the forest and discover Yoko’s belongings. Fable orders Kuro to do something with the car. Meanwhile, Rei and Suzuki load their guns with ammunition.

Rei gives Hinako a handgun and tells her how she should handle Fable if he gets near her. Before Rei heads off somewhere, Hinako shoots Rei. Fable and Kuro hear the gunshots from afar. Hinako tells Suzuki that Rei killed her parents, not Fable. Rei gets up and Suzuki learns Rei was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Hinako explains what helped her uncover the truth about her parents’ demise. Rei can’t believe he made a simple mistake with the words he shared Hinako’s way. Rei toys with Hinako and Hinako gets up from her wheelchair. Suzuki tells her not to move another step because there are mines around her.

Rei taunts Hinako further, and Hinako shoots and falls. The episode ends with Fable saving Hinako before she can trigger the mines.

The Episode Review

Multiple characters admitted to or demonstrated their shortcomings in this week’s episode of The Fable. Having Fable admit that Yoko’s memorization skills exceed his own is a great example. Rei’s poor planning strategies showcase his flaws as a crook too. These instances prove that both sides are imperfect.

It makes this arc feel more stressful and engaging. Speaking of Yoko, it’s nice that she’s more involved in this Rei-centric mission. If only the story had given Yoko more wonderful tasks to tackle in prior story arcs. Although Yoko gets captured and makes a simple mistake in this one, fans will applaud her for doing something.

Even Kuro has a purpose to fulfill here. Seeing him help Fable defeat Rei and Suzuki is charming. However, many folks will love what the author did with Hinako’s character. It’d been foolish to see her cooperate with Rei and Suzuki, especially after all Rei put her through.

The episode gives fans a decent explanation of how Hinako uncovered the truth about her parents’ demise. Yet, many will argue that Rei’s mistreatment of Hinako was enough to justify her betraying Rei in this episode. Although this episode’s visuals weren’t stellar, the storytelling remains captivating.
