Lies and Falsehoods
Episode 19 of The Fable begins with Rei staring at his laptop. Rei watches footage of Hinako using the bathroom and closes his laptop. Then, Rei enters his agency’s dining area and chats with Isaki. Rei tells Isaki he’s heading to a girls’ meeting. He and Isaki discuss children in today’s society. Rei wants to take advantage of today’s youth’s vulnerabilities.
Fable arrives at work. Prez and Misaki want Fable to develop drawings for a future Christmas event’s flyers. Fable says he’ll do it and Prez says he’ll give Fable a 100-yen-an-hour raise if things go smoothly. Internally, Kainuma’s jealous of the treatment Fable is receiving. He wants to hurt Fable so he can peep on Misaki.
While Fable’s researching Christmas stuff on a computer, Prez tasks Misaki with something important. Later, Kainuma heads to a park while in disguise. Kainuma wants to hurt Fable. Fable arrives and notices Kainuma. Kainuma flees the scene defeated. Fable heads home to complete his Christmas assignment.
Then, we cut away to Prez visiting Mama at her bar. He discusses Fable with Mama. Prez argues Fable’s drawings aren’t great but they evoke a sense of warmth. Meanwhile, Fable visits Yoko. Fable wants Yoko to give him intel about Santa Claus. Yoko shares some info on Santa. She also discusses tales about her childhood with Fable.
Then, Fable opens up about his youth. Fable confirms he doesn’t know what his parents look like. Also, Fable says when he became self-aware, Fable Two raised him. Fable says he learned about Christmas and Santa at an older age. Yoko says she enjoyed the holidays despite knowing Santa wasn’t a real person at a young age.
She cries and admits she misses her parents. Fable returns to work the following day and shows Prez and Misaki his Christmas drawings. He tells the two it took him a while to create the drawings. Prez insists Fable take it easy and have fun drawing. Fable understands and leaves the workplace to complete a delivery.
He visits Rei’s agency to deliver Rei’s packages. Hinako spots Fable and tells Rei she recognizes him. Rei invites Fable inside and they discuss Hinako’s connection with Fable. Hinako deems Fable a pervert but Fable argues why he’s not. Rei shares some sly remarks and Fable departs.
Rei wonders how Fable would respond if Misaki and Kainuma disappeared. Fable returns to Yoko’s place for food. He shares more details about his assassination mission that involved Hinako. Fable says he had three targets and one of them went missing. He argues Rei was the man who fled from him.
Fable brings up Rei, Suzuki, and Hinako. Yoko tells Fable not to get involved with them because if he does Fable Two won’t be happy. Meanwhile, Suzuki and Rei discuss Fable. Rei tells Suzuki he survived one of Fable’s missions. He delves into his past. Rei confirms he built a prostitution ring four or five years ago.
He confirms he got a lot of enemies from this operation. Rei explains what happened on June 10th, the day of a hitman’s assigned assassination mission. He confirms Hinako survived the ordeal and was a runaway someone named Kawahira threatened into the prostitution ring. Rei claims he visited Hinako at the hospital.
He confirms he asked her about the hitman and the prostitution ring. Hinako didn’t offer Rei any leads and Rei confirmed he murdered Hinako’s parents after that accident. Rei argues the hitman who was after him that day was Fable. Later, Rei calls Kainuma’s mother and schedules an in-person appointment with her.
After that, we cut away to Hinako at the park. Hinako looks around and wonders if Fable will show up. Then, Kainuma and his mother arrive at the park. Kainuma and his mother discuss their meeting with Rei and Kainuma’s low pay. Then, Fable arrives at the park and sits somewhere. Hinako tells him to come near her since Fable is acting weird.

The Episode Review
This was an amazing chapter of The Fable. It was well-structured and delivered new information about several characters proficiently. For starters, this was one of the rare occasions where a Yoko-drunk segment led to something insightful and significant. Yoko doesn’t confirm her parents perished, but judging by her depressing reaction, we can assume they did.
Although it’d been great if an earlier episode delved into Yoko’s past like this one, it’s great to see it explored. The same can be said with Fable and his family. It’s interesting that Fable Two seemingly raised Fable at a young age. Hopefully, Season 1 will delve into Fable’s family more, shedding light on what happened to them.
Fable and Yoko aside, Kainuma continues being a slimeball no one should sympathize with. Although folks can blame Kainuma’s mother for Kaninuma’s poor behavior, this fellow hasn’t shown any feats that paint him in a positive light. That said, many people wouldn’t blame others if they rooted for Rei and his comrades to take this scumbag out.
In addition to providing folks with great laughs and heartfelt story segments between Prez, Fable, and Misaki, The Fable episode 19 was fantastic. I’m excited to see what unfolds after this Kainuma interrogation segment.
