The Clearing – Season 1 Episode 2 “Kindred” Recap & Review

Kindred

Amy looks at the lake and notices people searching for Sara. To make matters worse, Matriah rings Tamsin to let her know that she’s on her way. Thereafter, Amy spots Sara on top of a tree but she decides to keep quiet about it. Her brother, however, discovers her and alerts everybody.

Billy’s teacher approaches Freya when she takes Billy to school. The teacher inquires about the bruise on his eye but Freya explains that it was an accident and also that her mom was present.

The teacher questions as to whether her mother’s information is on file. Freya receives a call from the house before this can continue, telling her how Matriah ran away. We are now starting to unravel a great deal of information, and come to the realization that we’re juggling two timelines.

In the past timeline, as soon as Matriah gets to the facility, she examines the kids. Anton tells her that he’s the one who discovered Sara once she ran away just as she is about to leave. When they enter the house, Matriah yells at Tamsin while thanking Anton for all that he’s done. Amy is summoned by Matriah though, who accuses her of betraying both her and the family. She then makes an effort to make Amy obey her.

In the present timeline, Freya goes to see Joe. She speaks with him about failing to make the police call. He justifies his actions by saying that he doesn’t have any influence there. Thereafter, Joe and Freya share a meal.

When Billy and Freya get home, her door is wide open and he mentions how someone at school has been speaking to him through the fence, causing her to get anxious.

In the past timeline, Matriah gives a speech describing how many lives she has saved when she takes the stage at church. Once Sara grabs the microphone and yells, “She’s not my mother”, everything immediately changes. Tamsin grabs her and takes her outside. When Matriah leaves to smoke, she runs into Investigator Joe.

Detective Joe is looking for information that will enable him to obtain a warrant to search Matriah’s property. He is told by police officers surrounding him that he can’t gather any support, but he continues to try.

Amy and Matriah discuss Amy’s failure to take the necessary steps to help Sara. Matriah tells Amy that she is the successor to The Kindred, going on to tell her that she needs to be initiated and purified of all her transgressions. For this, Amy receives some drugs from Matriah, sending her down a bizarre path.

After the trip that is induced by the drug, Amy searches for Sara. She locates Dr. Lathan, who tells her that the girl is gone.

In the present timeline, Freya receives a call from Wayne. On recognizing him, she immediately cuts the call. After that, Freya yells at her mother over the phone for providing Wayne with her contact information.

Matriah and Freya have a conversation and she accuses her mother of contacting Wayne to have Billy taken away. Matriah tells her while looking her in the eyes that Wayne will never separate her from Billy.

Matriah calls somebody towards the end of the episode. This person informs her that he has been sitting outside the school and watching the playground.

The Episode Review

Freya, who is still struggling with PTSD, is the focus of this episode. She is guarding her son and searching for a young girl at the same time. Meanwhile, in the past timeline, Sara keeps causing problems which puts Amy in a difficult situation.

This episode is an improvement compared to the previous one, adding in layers of intrigue with the mystery while the thriller elements keep things interesting, slowly revealing these little puzzle pieces that are starting to fit together.
