The Accident (2024) aka Accidente is the latest Netflix Original show from Mexico that graced our screens in August 2024. With exciting themes of revenge, murder, betrayals and secrets, it’s for those who love crime and investigative shows. The 10-episode series stars Ana Claudia Talancón, Sebastián Martínez, Alberto Guerra, Eréndira Ibarra, Erick Elias, Ruben Zamora and is helmed by Leonardo Padrón.

To get things started, The Accident Season 1 begins with Rodrigo Lobo’s birthday party which also becomes ground zero for some of the dads to win a 40-million dollar contract. But when distractions and a gust of wind have the bouncy house including the kids flying away, chaos erupts.

While the Lobos hope to chalk it off as an accident and mourn their kid, Charro and Brenda are out for revenge as they need to find someone responsible for the incident. And in between, the Lobos’ groundskeeper, Moncho is caught in a mess way above his pay grade.

I’ll be honest, I had no expectations going into this Netflix show and the only thought I had watching that absurd trailer was what in the Mexican Up is this? But if you tuned in for a campy comedy thriller, The Accident Season 1 will surprise you in the best way possible.

The first episode lays the foundation for all the exposition, the dynamics, the introduction of all the players and the foreshadowing that will all make sense as the story unfolds. But even then, the way the premiere is set up to show the “accident” from all perspectives will have you not only sitting through the first episode but tuning in for the next.

And once you are hooked, oh boy, The Accident will not disappoint you. The only way to describe Season 1 is that this Netflix show keeps its foot on the gas pedal from the get-go and doesn’t ease up right till the end, no, not even till the last second of the show. Several subplots keep the show running, all the characters are grey and messed up yet likeable and intriguing. Even the bad guys are so fun that while you hate them you can’t stop watching them.

Along with that deliciously intricate narrative and structure, the melancholic music adds to the tone of The Accident Season 1 and ties it all together. Technically, this show is as well made as it can be and while this should not be surprising due to the advent of technology, there are still some Netflix shows that miss the mark.

But The Accident is not one such show. Season 1 also makes the most of its locale as it is set in the modern and large town of Santa Cruz yet it weaves in the forest and the traditional aspects, especially with the storyline of the missing kid, Paula.

If I do have one gripe with the story, it is the fact that it’s 10 episodes long when it could have been crisply edited into 6-7 episodes without losing its charm. I know this is surprising since this show has such a large ensemble cast. Yet, they are all so closely interlinked that the story doesn’t need such a long timeframe.

We see The Accident Season 1 suffer due to this pacing in the second half for a bit when it drags on certain subplots when it could have easily resolved all the drama without losing the viewer’s attention. However, the Netflix show finds itself again in the finale and gives a well-tied resolution while still keeping us hooked till that shocking last second.

While I won’t comment on the rewatch value as The Accident Season 1 is not really unique or novel, it is still entertaining. Even if you plan to only watch it once and enjoy the thriller, I’d say the show has succeeded.
