Terror Tuesday: Extreme – Episode 4 “The Vow” Recap & Review

The Vow

Terror Tuesday: Extreme episode 4 starts with a woman diving in after her partner in the pool, believing him to be dead. He doesn’t reveal why he was face-down, as we instead cut forward 8 years later.

This is Nat, and he’s still with his partner all these years later. They decide to go for steamed squid together, as Nat has been offered a big architect job. They head in to see a statue of a goddess and decide to pray to her. Now, Nat and his girlfriend actually run a villa together on the Black Hills Beach, which isn’t far from here. Nat is here to do a whole project but the old lady inside the temple stops them, holding Nat’s arm as she discusses the history of this place.

It turns out the Goddess of Black Hills, when she was alive, ended up in a sordid affair with a Prince. She was a fishmonger’s daughter and when the elders found out, she decided to end her life. However, the Prince was actually seeing someone else and involved in an affair. When he betrothed her, hell was unleashed on the Royals. At least, that’s how the story goes. However, the Goddess also has lovers reveal their true face to one another.

When it comes to Nat, he’s holding back from his partner, Dao, and that, according to the prophecy from the Goddess, is not good. Now, Nat is conflicted because between this architecture job here in Thailand, he’s also offered a role in Sweden. He hasn’t actually said anything to his partner though, which isn’t helpful.

Naturally, the Goddess ends up stalking Nat, watching his every move as he deliberates over all of this. Dao ends up seeing the same thing, and as this watery goddess shows up in the house, she stalks the pair and drops off Nat’s reading. “Hide not any secrets.”

Nat eventually reveals the truth about the architecture job in Sweden and the truth is, he’s already accepted the job. He hasn’t even bothered to speak to her about it, which is a massive deal. Turns out Dao prayed that morning what would happen between them, and whether they’d even get married. Now it seems, all of that has been thrown out.

Dao has felt suffocated as she has been drifting away from Nat and her love is fading. However, she believes marriage might actually help them. Even worse, this whole architecture role with her father was done out of pity, and as for Nat, he points out that he applied for this role to get away from her. These truths continue to spill over, as Dao reveals she initially prayed to the Goddess to keep him with her forever.

With everything out in the open, Nat and Dao begin crying and eventually comfort one another. It’s a big step in their relationship and the pair are finally more open with one another. Both Nat and Dao decide to show up in Sweden… and agree to figure it out together.

The Episode Review

Communication is the key to a healthy relationship, and it’s something a lot of couples don’t do as much as they should.

This can lead to all sorts of issues from infidelity to abuse and worse. This episode does a great job capturing that in all its ugly glory, with the Goddess essentially acting like a therapist of sorts for Nat and Dao to get all their issues out into the open.

It’s a nasty, painful process, especially with the layers of skin peeled off which is symbolic of the layers of deceit the pair have kept from one another all this time. Although not outright scary, this is definitely one of the stronger episodes of this anthology and a really nice inclusion.
