“Evil, Ornery, Scandalous and Evil”
Episode 5 of Tell Me Lies Season 2 starts with Diana dressed up for Halloween as she tries to stop herself from breaking into tears. She runs into Pippa in the library and the two chat. Pippa thanks Diana for getting Wrigley to stop his friends from bullying her. She finds herself feeling attracted towards Diana and gets caught off guard.
Bree leaves class early while Marianne asks to chat with Lucy. Marianne states that Lucy had a low GPA because she dropped a class. Lucy mentions Stephen and how his joining her class made her drop it off. Marianne empathises with Lucy and agrees to help her get a better grade. Lucy learns that Marianne was home alone that weekend because Oliver is away and gets suspicious of Bree.
Later that day, Lucy meets Lydia and talks to her about Stephen trying to mess with her classes. In the dorm room, Lucy introduces Bree to Lydia as she is packing for a trip. Bree tells Lucy that she is going on a trip with Oliver and asks her to hide the fact from Pippa.
On the other hand, Stephen’s sister Sadie visits him for Halloween as he is looking at his LSAT scores. Stephen sees his scores and is happy but Diana shows up there and tells him how she did not do well on her LSAT. Diana tells Stephen that she will not be able to apply with him and the two decide to talk about this after Sadie leaves.
Meanwhile, Oliver boards the hotel room he had booked for Bree and himself. Bree asks Oliver to take her to the bar on a date. In the dorm room, Lucy, Lydia, and Pippa hang out with Leo. Chris shows up to meet Lydia and things get awkward for him and Pippa. Pippa tries to mask her discomfort by telling Lucy that she is okay with Chris being around.
Diana tries to compose herself and goes to a Halloween party with Stephen, Sadie and Wrigley but feels out of place. Similarly, Pippa feels uncomfortable at the party because of Chris. On the other hand, Oliver has a romantic date with Bree at the bar as she gets alcohol using a fake ID card. Bree talks to Oliver about Marianne and tries to learn more about his first wife.
However, he refuses to talk to Bree about his first wife. Oliver is shocked when he learns that Lucy knows about their affair but Bree asks him to trust her. The bartender calls Oliver out for dating a minor but he kisses her in front of the bartender to prove a point. Bree feels embarrassed by the gesture.
At the same time, Lydia meets Stephen at the party and calls him out for breaking Lucy’s heart. Sadie is shocked to learn that Stephen dated someone else. Diana finds Pippa alone in the crowd and goes to talk to her. On the other hand, Lydia tells Lucy that she confronted Stephen and scared him off.
Lucy asks her childhood friend to back out of her business when Lydia brings up how Lucy had punched Stephen in the face. Sadie asks Stephen to get her some sneakers from the dorm and Evan joins him to get away from his one-night-stand. Diana leaves too and Pippa decides to leave the party with Wrigley to avoid Chris.
In the dorm room, Stephen talks about his dysfunctional family and how his mother cut him off. Evan states how Stephen’s family reminds him of Bree and he tells his friend how much he misses her. Stephen gives Evan some relationship advice while Pippa and Wrigley hang out in her dorm room. Pippa tells Wrigley that he should just talk to his brother if he feels like it.
The two have an open conversation as friends and discuss their relationship as friends. Pippa mentions how she has faked all her orgasms, including the ones with Wrigley and he is shocked. The two laugh about it and Pippa asks him to spend the night in her dorm room. At the party, Lucy grows concerned when she cannot see Pippa anywhere.
Chris mentions Pippa which only annoys Lucy. Just then, Sadie shows up and calls Lucy out for stalking Stephen. Lucy calls Stephen lying and manipulative which gets Sadie upset. Diana takes Sadie away as Lydia praises her friend for standing up for herself. The next morning, Oliver goes through the photos taken by Bree and he compliments her photography. He apologises for his behaviour at the bar.
The two start making out and eventually hook up. Meanwhile, Lucy is shocked to see Wrigley leave her dorm room. Pippa tells Lucy that she was not hooking up with Wrigley. Just then, Lydia tells the two that a girl from Chris’ class had accused him of rape. Lydia tries to defend her brother but Lucy tries to stand up for the girl. The two argue but Pippa excuses herself from the conversation.
Meanwhile, Stephen and Diana talk about her LSAT scores. Diana mentions that she would not mind taking the LSAT exam again the following year and wonders if Stephen will wait for her. Just then, Wrigley shows up at the dorm room and tells Stephen he was at Pippa’s dorm room the night before. Stephen gets territorial over Wrigley but he asks Stephen to back off.
Sadie mentions her conversation with Lucy which gets Stephen upset. Stephen tries to call Lucy but she does not answer his call. He runs into Lydia and tells her all the things Lucy told him about Lydia to piss her off. Stephen then sends Lucy a voice note which scares her off. Lydia shows up at the dorm room and Lucy tries to apologise to her and tries to defend herself.
Lydia is calmer and ignores Stephen’s comment. However, Sadie listens to the voice note Stephen had sent to Lucy and gets scared. Stephen tries to defend himself to his sister but she is horrified. He tries to calm Sadie down but she decides to pack up and leave. Oliver drives Bree back to town after their weekend getaway and drops her off.
Meanwhile, Lucy spends the night with Leo and the two have a fun night together. Diana shows up at Pippa’s dorm room and tries to talk to her. She helps Pippa bleach her hair and brings up the letter written by Chris’ victim. Diana notices Pippa’s reaction to the comment and tries to divert her attention as the episode comes to an end.
The Episode Review
If there is one character from Tell Me Lies that just makes my blood boil, it is Stephen and it was so satisfying to see the reaction on his sister – Sadie’s face when she hears the voice note he sent to Lucy. The fear in Sadie’s eyes when she sees their abusive mother in Stephen was palpable and it was right of Stephen to panic.
Lydia and Lucy will stop being friends when the truth about Chris sexually assaulting Pippa comes out in the open. We can see an attraction between Diana and Pippa that may eventually turn into a relationship. It is also likely that Diana intentionally performed badly on her LSAT to try and get away from Stephen.
With Diana and her father’s support gone, Stephen will likely use Lydia to get back at Lucy and step up the social ladder both at the same time. I feel bad for Wrigley who still has feelings for Pippa and wants to be a better person for her sake!
