Tell Me Lies – Season 2 Episode 2 Recap & Review

“I Shall Now Perform a 180 Flip-Flop”

Episode 2 of Tell Me Lies Season 2 starts with a flashback from 2008 when Lucy, Pippa and Evan celebrate Bree’s birthday at a restaurant. The girls give Bree a matching T-shirt but Evan ends up gifting Bree a pair of diamond earrings. Bree is overwhelmed after seeing the gift and tries to tell Evan that she likes it. Lucy and Pippa leave to let the couple talk they find Leo there and hang out with him.

Bree and Evan talk about the awkwardness between them which leads to an argument. Evan asks for some time away from Bree and leaves the restaurant. Bree watches Lucy and Pippa chatting with Leo and leaves to go home as well. Leo and Lucy exchange phone numbers while Bree runs into Professor Oliver on her way home.

The two get talking and Bree tells Oliver how she had a fight with her boyfriend over the expensive earrings he gifted her. Oliver understands where Bree is coming from and empathises with her. Bree asks Oliver to lend him another cigarette. She confesses that she does not smoke and asks if the earrings look good on her. The two share a moment when Oliver takes the earring out of Bree’s ear.

The next morning, Evan and Stephen talk about Bree’s birthday party and the latter exclaims how he is not happy that Lucy is still around his friends. Evan also shares how he got into a fight with Bree and how he is tired of having arguments with her. Stephen suggests that Evan should tell the truth to Bree about the fact that he had hooked up with someone.

He states that if he sees himself spending the rest of his life with Bree, he should free himself of the guilt of his past actions. Stephen adds that Bree possibly already knows the truth and is waiting for him to confess.

At the same time, Bree tells Lucy and Pippa how Evan does not understand her. She reveals how she felt sharing a cigarette with Oliver when she does not even smoke. Bree also tells her friends how she felt when Oliver picked the earring out of her ear. The girls tease Brie for how she had gotten a teacher to flirt with her. Diana shows up at Stephen’s dorm room and runs into Wrigley’s tutor – Chloe.

She learns that Wrigley was hooking up with her. Diana asks Wrigley to keep the fact that they hooked up one time a secret from Stephen because she does not want to make Stephen uncomfortable. On the other hand, Lucy meets Leo on a date and the two end up bonding. Leo asks her about Stephen and about the confession that he made at the cafeteria but Lucy brushes it off.

Leo and Lucy end up bonding over their sense of humour and share a kiss. Meanwhile, Evan and Bree meet at their house and try to sort out their fight when Evan confesses. He states that he cheated on her after having sex with a random girl. Bree is infuriated and states that Evan gaslit her into believing that she did something wrong. She calls him out for trying to manipulate her by gifting her the expensive earrings.

Bree leaves to think about the confession and Evan wonders if she will break up with him. On the other hand, Wrigley tries to get Stephen to go out for a party with him that night. Stephen asks what his friends, the football team, are doing and learns that he is no longer practising with them because of his injury. Stephen feels empathetic for Wrigley and agrees to hang out with him.

On the contrary, Lucy returns to her dorm room to find Pippa consoling Bree. She is shocked to learn that Evan confessed to the cheating but is relieved to learn that he hadn’t mentioned her name. Bree forces Pippa and Lucy to go to the college party and asks to be left alone to think about the situation.

At the party, Pippa leaves Leo and Lucy to hang out and gets a drink. She meets a classmate named Quinn who asks for Pippa’s number. On the other hand, Chris shows up there and talks to Pippa while Lucy and Leo make out. Bree gets dressed and goes back to the restaurant where she last ran into Oliver. She finds him having a drink at the bar and sits beside him.

Bree tells Oliver how she was having the worst day in ages and he offers to buy her a drink to cheer her up. Wrigley and Stephen spend the night playing video games when the two discuss how Drew is trying to avoid talking to Wrigley. Stephen reveals how Lucy broke his phone when she got upset with him but does not reveal what prompted her to do so.

At the party, Lucy watches Pippa and Chris kissing. At the restaurant, Bree discusses Evan’s cheating with Oliver. Oliver tries to offer her some advice. Oliver tells Bree how he married his first wife when he was in college and how she died after which he married Marianne. Bree feels sorry for Oliver and asks if he is happy with Marianne. She tries to flirt with him but Oliver states that they should not cross the line.

They leave the restaurant and Oliver kisses Bree on the cheek. Bree kisses Oliver back on the cheek and the two share a moment. Bree is embarrassed when Oliver tries to stop her and rushes back home where she has sex with Evan. At the party, Diana checks up on Pippa who was throwing up due to being drunk. She kicks Chris out of the room and asks Lucy to check up on Pippa.

Both Lucy and Diana try to nurse Pippa and try to get her something to drink. They take Pippa to the dorm room and Diana tells Lucy that she suspects Chris was forcing himself on Pippa. Lucy thanks Diana and puts Pippa to sleep. The next morning, Lucy talks to Pippa and learns that she has no recollection of hooking up with Chris. Lucy asks Pippa if she feels like she was roofied but Pippa gets upset about being coddled.

She asks Lucy to back off and asks her to keep this a secret from Bree. At the same time, Bree tells Evan that she is willing to forgive him and lies about cheating on him as well. She asks Evan if he could forgive her for what she did and Evan refuses. Bree is disgusted by Evan’s response and confesses that the lied about cheating on him.

Diana seems shaken up after what happened to Pippa but composes herself when Stephen shows up. Lucy and Leo are getting coffee together when a man gets upset with Lucy for spilling his drink. Lucy is startled when Leo punches the man and leaves the coffee shop without saying a word to him.

Lucy goes to her class where Professor Banks introduces Stephen as the Teaching Assistant. Bree gets dressed and goes to Oliver’s cabin asking him to kiss her. Oliver complies while Pippa appears shaken up by the events of the night before. The episode ends with Pippa going to the laundromat to wash the clothes she was wearing to the party.

The Episode Review

The sexual tension between Olive and Bree had me wanting them to hook up from the beginning of this episode. But seeing how that happened by the end of this episode makes me believe that Evan and Bree will not be going through with their marriage. I am also worried that Bree will learn the truth about the fact that Evan hooked up with Lucy which will lead her to break her friendship with Lucy as well. 

It is infuriating how Stephen does not seem to end his manipulative tactics in this season as well as he is trying to make Lucy uncomfortable to the point that she breaks down. I hope Lucy gets annoyed and reveals the truth about the accident that was caused by Stephen which led to Macy’s death. 

We can gauge that Lydia is upset with Lucy for exposing the truth about Chris sexually assaulting Pippa and that could be the reason for their fallout. Diana appears to have taken the incident personally and it is possibly going to be the one thing that gets the two to be friends and eventually hook up.
