The Dark Manual
Episode 10 of Sunny starts with a brief prologue including a festival called Setsubun involving the oni, which are demons. Wearing masks, these people move around a temple until the camera pans down and shows a trickle of blood leading away from a dead body. Who could it be? All will be revealed, dear readers!
We then cut to Suzie, who finds Zen safe and sound inside the warehouse. Unfortunately, Hime shows up with her goons. With a gun pointed to them, Tanaka shows too and fiddles around with Sunny while Suzie demands answers. With a system wipe underway, Tanaka opens up the back of Sunny and rips out the card and takes off.
What do the Yakuza want with Sunny?
Hime, before taking Suzie and Zen away, reveals that Masa is definitely dead after sending her his shoes, which is her way of sending a message about his death. The pair are taken to a cage which also holds Mixxy and Hiro inside.
Outside, Tanaka takes the card and tells Hime that they’ve managed to keep the bulk of the code intact. Given the system wipe has started with the oldest files first, if they’re quick, they’ll manage to obtain the code they’re after. Hime gives an evil smile but that soon disappears when she realizes Jin is nearby – and he wants results.
Hiro believes they need to stop Hime and while Suzie doesn’t really care for this, she does when she understands the implications of what they’re trying to do. Given Sunny just straight up killed someone at the end of episode 8, and the Kill-Bot obviously did the same thing earlier in the timeline, Hiro believes they’ve found a way of pushing a bot beyond its limitations. Sunny has now reached that limitation and she hasn’t been decommissioned and wiped like that other bot. Masa died trying to prevent this from happening so this is a way of honouring his memory, which Suzie is onboard with.
How does the gang break out of their prison?
However, what neither Tanaka nor Hime have realized is that Masa has sabotaged the ports, and it’s not possible to transfer the files. While Sunny seems like a bit of a bust, Tanaka suggests that Hime get near to Jin’s bot and use that as a means of transferring everything over.
At the same time, Noriko rings Suzie’s phone, which happens to be in Zen’s pocket because the Yakuza haven’t bothered to check there, I guess. Anyway, on Facetime, they realize that one of the mums inside the prison happens to be Yuko’s (one of the guards) mother. Suzie begs Noriko to do something, and she does just that. In fact, she threatens the woman, turning off her oxygen and demanding the others be released. He complies and the ganf are released.
While Mixxy keeps the guard busy, Hiro, Zen and Suzie head out and wander through the festival. They take oni masks to keep hidden and burst through the crowds. Suzie steps up to the podium and grabs the mic. She reiterates the words “suck a dick” which seems to be the code-word for Sunny turning back on. She immediately punches Tanaka in the face and heads off.
At the same time, Hime stabs Jin and tells him they need a strong leader… and it’s going to be her. That trickle of blood from the opening of the episode? It was actually Jin’s blood.
How does Sunny end?
Suzie races after Sunny, who hasn’t had her mind wiped after all, but she’s downbeat and unhappy about murdering that guy. Mixxy suggests taking the code out safely and extracting it but they need to get somewhere safe first. This means splitting up, with Sunny heading off with Mixxy alone… but not really. It turns out she was with the Yakuza all this time and a beaten Tanaka, sitting alongside her, praises Mixxy for doing such a good job.
Elsewhere, Hiro, Zen and Suny head to the retreat unaware of all this, where Masa worked on the robot in the first place. There, they find the trash-bot and, up on the pinboard, happens to be a letter addressed to Suzie.
The Episode Review
So after 10 weeks, Sunny comes to a close with a dramatic conclusion that actually doesn’t really get us any closer to resolving the conflict that the show started with. We do learn that Zen is still alive, and Masa is dead, but even that final part is a point of contention. We haven’t actually seen his body so there’s no definitive way to confirm he has passed away. He could still be alive for all we know.
Meanwhile, Sunny’s wipe clearly hasn’t gone ahead just yet, given she’s still the same Sunny and the way Suzie and her part ways is pretty fitting for both their characters, all things considered.
The Yakuza subplot, and the Mixxy reveal are both parts of this show that haven’t been all that surprising. We’ve had doubts about Mixxy for most of this season, given how she’s been acting and the whole shenanigans in the woods etc. but now we finally get confirmation that she’s a turncoat… but she doesn’t seem too happy about it. Ans then we have the Hime situation, who’s basically playing the “generic bad guy” role without too much depth to her character, which is a shame.
The visual design and overarching storyline hasn’t been too bad and I’m sure this holds up better as a binge-watch than one episode at a time every week. All things considered, Sunny has been an enjoyable watch but it certainly hasn’t been without its issues.
