Sunny – Season 1 Episode 7 “There’s Been A Shift” Recap & Review

There’s Been A Shift

Episode 7 of Sunny begins with news that Yakuza activity is going to be clamped down to try and root out criminal activities. The governor is making good progress but in his house, a masked assassin shows up, pushes his bot into the governor and he ends up bleeding to death. And this masked assassin? None other than Hime. She sets the whole scene up to make it look like a bot murder, wiping the memory of the bot and leaving it in peace.

Meanwhile, Suzie tries to wake Sunny up. Mixxy has to leave, but she apologizes constantly as she has to go to work. After some banter about clothes for her to wear, Suzie shakes Sunny and she turns from static to zzz’s on her screen.

Unfortunately, when Suzie turns Sunny back on, she’s grouchy and pretty snarky. She keeps a distance from her and heads outside to watch TV. Suzie knows that Sunny is different and believes she may have some form of PTSD. In fact, the bot isn’t even doing chores either.

In prison, Noriko does well to establish herself among the ladies and even rings Sunny too from the prison. As the pair laugh and joke in the the room, Mixxy returns. She was fired for being 5 minutes late, and Mixxy blames Suzie for everything. She lashes out at our protagonist, telling her that she has a grief shield and can do whatever she want. Mixxy questions her ethics and why Suzie hasn’t even tried to learn Japanese.

Meanwhile, Hime finds herself in the middle of a coup as the group vote on who will be the next oyabun. In front of everyone, Hime is told by Jin that her father lost faith in her and he chose him.

Back with Mixxy and Suzie, they take Sunny over to the engineers, who points out that there’s a tracker inside Suzie. Specifically seeing her every move. Now, it could well be that the Yakuza are tracking Suzie, but there’s also another dot, a green one that hasn’t moved much which could well be Masa?

Back home, Suzie tries to find the tracker and where it may be planted. It turns out it’s inside her wedding ring. The only time she took it off was when she was in the shower so it appears Sunny may have been hacked and planted it then.

A message from Dee comes through in the middle of this, which Mixxy reads. She sees that Dee has outright rejected her and Suzie then backs it up after she has a shower. She spews a whole bunch of rhetoric about her past and how she wants to do better. Suzie doesn’t want to let Mixxy come…but then the latter decides she will after all. She even deletes Dee’s message, whether to protect Suzie’s feelings or to cover something up we shall see.

Suzie decides to put the wedding ring inside Sunny so they can track the bot, before she leaves with Mixxy. However, Hime receives word from her men that Suzie is onto them. Hime is losing power though as Jin has now taken over.

While she grabs her gun, Suzie and Mixxy head to the apartment complex building where the signal was coming from (the green dot on the screen) and try to find Zen and Masa. Down in the basement, she finds the man who originally gave him Sunny. He tells her that they need to talk and as we end the episode, we see a shot of Sunny waking up…

The Episode Review

So Sunny returns this week with another slow slice of mystery. I’ve said it pretty much every week but this show is slowly bleeding out under the weight of having to wait extended periods of time to see what happens next. The trouble is, the show is nowhere near exciting or enthralling enough to justify those large periods between chapters.

In terms of what we get here, there’s a contrast between Suzie and Hime as they both come to terms with their new world orders. Both of them have been tested but we still don’t know the full extent of what’s happening and how Masa and Zen play into all of this.

For now, we’ll have to wait to see where this one goes next week.
