Sunderland Till I Die Season 3 is the latest Netflix sports documentary featuring Adien McGeady, Nick Barnes, and George Honeyman. The three-part series chronicles the journey of Sunderland A.F.C., one of England’s most revered football clubs, as they try to claw their way back to the Championship. At the same time, it also shows how much passionate support a football club can inspire within a city.
The series takes place in the city of Sunderland, where football isn’t just a game but it is a way of life. Season 3 kicks off with a scene in a church where fans of all ages gather to pray for their team’s success. They ask for strength to handle the highs and lows of the season with grace. Switching gears, we join an interview with Lee Cattermole, a midfielder for Sunderland A.F.C.
Lee Cattermole shares the thrill of being part of one of the world’s most passionate fanbases, thanking the city for its loyal support. Through the eyes of the locals, we also witness the city’s remarkable transformation from a place of leisure to a football powerhouse. The show takes a unique approach to storytelling and follows a mostly linear narrative.
However, it often alternates between interviews and real-life scenes. The screenplay is spontaneous, with no predetermined content, which makes it all the more original and authentic. The cherry on top is that we also get to hear from big football stars, both players and coaches, as they spill the beans about their time and experience at Sunderland.
In that respect, “Sunderland Till I Die” follows the Netflix documentary recipe to a T. Sports documentaries usually have a dedicated fan base itching to peek behind the curtain of their favorite players or teams. That’s part of why this series has rolled into its third season with such success.
Netflix is known for pulling out all the stops to captivate and keep audiences hooked. Yet, with “Sunderland Till I Die,” it feels like they’ve stuck to the same old formula, maybe trying to keep it concise.
The documentary relies heavily on pre-recorded interviews and is rife with clips from previous matches, so there aren’t many technical titbits to scrutinize. However, one aspect worth appreciating is the editing. The makers have ingeniously used interviews as voice-overs for the highlight footage, making the series an exciting watch.
A standout segment involves players explaining their team’s strategies and their thoughts during the big game. This is one of the best decisions as it offers a peek into the professional mentality and the pressures they face during matches—something we as an audience might never grasp from simply watching them kickball on TV.
Sunderland: Till I Die Season 3 is not more than a typical sports documentary, aiming to depict the present state of Sunderland and how sports can unite a city. One of the key takeaways from the series is how an entire city rallies behind its team, setting aside differences. The series aptly portrays Sunderland’s football stadium as the city’s beating heart, exemplifying the community’s spirit and solidarity.
