What Happens to Matei?

Episode 6 of Subteran starts with Cami locked in a cell at the police station. She tries to explain the situation with Matei’s kidnapping to Vasile, but he ignores her. Meanwhile, Tanase asks Dracu and Tili to join him for the meeting with Lars

They stop by the morgue where Tili and Dracu realise he knows about Tili. Meanwhile, Bones and Cornel are still locked in the basement, trying to get out. Bones regrets spending all his time following Cornel, who seems not to care about anything but the mission to the extent of choosing the mission over saving Matei.

Does Cami save Matei?

During the inquiry with Golescu, Cami reveals that she saw the list on Bank’s computer and Golescu’s name is on it. She says that Golescu has received a lot of payments from Tanase for years, but Golescu tries to brush her off as a crazy woman. However, she has more to say about his visit to Tanase’s house

Golescu freaks out, realising that Cami knows so much, and leaves the interrogation room. Vasile was watching the questioning and wants to follow up with Cami’s claims and check out if Matei is missing, but Golescu stops him. Regardless, Vasile believes Cami. He gives her a chance to escape by assaulting him and taking his key card.

Tanase calls Cami and gives her the meet-up location. She takes a cab and heads to the Royal Ballroom. Crisi arrives just as Tanase and Lars’ people conflict due to the lack of payment. Tanase allows her to log in to the computer and recover the cryptocurrency. She gets Matei momentarily after the Lars deal goes through, but Tanase does not intend to let her go. He wants revenge for Crisi’s death.

Meanwhile, Bones, Cornel, and Tatu arrive at the scene with the police. Golescu tries to take control of the situation but without success. The arrival of the police leads to a fight in the ballroom. However, Cami was prepared for a similar situation, so when Dracu logs in to his account, she remotely gains access and drains the accounts again.

Tanase seems to care less about the money and still wants Cami and Matei dead. However, the eight million in the account is Tili’s money. She has been planning to get rid of Tanase the whole time and that money is her way out. Therefore, Tili cannot let Tanase kill Cami. Instead, when the police barges in, Tili escapes with Dracu and Matei after shooting Tanase.

Cami and Bones are arrested. However, Golescu now works for Tili and she orders him to release them. After leaving the police station, Tili sends Cami a location and asks her to go with only Bones or she will kill Matei. Cami asks Cornel to look after her mother while she heads to her apartment for a change of clothes, but they head out to the location instead.

Tili wants Cami to access to give her back the money, but Cami does not intend to until she knows Matei is safe. However, Tili does not intend to play ball and instead threatens Cami, saying she will cut Matei into pieces little by little until she agrees to give her back the money.

A fight ensues, and in the process, Bones is shot. Dracu almost shoots Cami, but Tili shoots him instead, since she only cares about the money.

Cami has another contingency plan. She has the list of all the powerful people on Tanase’s payroll. If she does not log into the account daily, the list will be automatically sent to Interpol.

Tili wants to continue running her father’s organisation and the list going out would expose her. After getting back the money, Tili agrees to let Cami, Bones, and Matei leave. Cami believes in her plan, since she later assures Matei that they will never have to see Tili again.

What happens to Tanase?

Tanase was aware that Tili and Dracu had been planning to betray him. When Lars threatens him with Tili, Tanase shows no emotion and even asks Lars to take her, since she is not her daughter.

Tili is hurt and Dracu is not about to let Lars take Tili. Tili shoots Tanase, but he is rushed to the hospital by Golescu. However, Golescu is an opportunist and only cares about whoever pays him. Therefore, Tanase goes to prison for murder using the evidence found in Bones’ apartment.

What happens to Golescu?

Golescu does everything to protect his cover. When his plan to frame Cami and Bones as Luca’s murderers fail, he comes up with a new one. Tatu and Cornel have to tell him about their investigation since he is their superior, and he uses it to his advantage.

He claims responsibility for the crackdown and arrest of Tanase, saying that he is determined to fight against organised crime. He even supplies Tili with the frozen hand which she can use to send Tanase in for murder, so Tanase will receive a life sentence.

With the list gone, Golescu has to take care of loose ends, so he frames Tatu for colluding with the criminals and obstructing his investigation. Tatu is arrested and Golescu receives a standing ovation as the hero who brought down a dangerous criminal organisation.

How does Subteran end?

Bones is reinstated as a police officer, as we see him seated next to Vasile during Golescu’s press briefing. While everyone else is clapping and applauding Golescu, Bones just sits there with anger written all over his face, since he knows Golescu is the mole in the police force.

The Episode Review

The miserable ending to the first season of Subteran leaves us unsatisfied. The people who deserved jail time get away with everything. Golescu is honoured for his fight against organised crime while Tili takes over her father’s organised crime business. Golescu thinks that the list is gone, but Cami says that she has to log in to some account daily or Interpol gets the list.

So does Cami still has the list, or does she just say that to protect her son and Bones? Although Bones is reinstated as a police officer, it is unlikely that he can work smoothly under Golescu, who he knows is a corrupt prosecutor.

The miserable ending sets the stage for a possible second season. Tili will continue to run the criminal organisation. Given her erratic behaviour, it is highly unlikely that she will be able to stay off the police’s radar.

Golescu might have a harder time being her inside man than he did with Tanase, which might create tension between them. There is also the list, which we are not sure of its whereabouts. Also, Bones will be determined to take down Golescu and clear Tatu’s name. In addition, there might be something between Cami and Bones that could make the romance plot for the next season.
