Retrieving the Old Compaq laptop
Episode 3 of Subteran starts at Luca’s funeral. Cami cannot attend, so Bones takes her to watch the funeral from afar. Tili is hidden among the procession, secretly checking to see if Cami appears. Lucas is laid to rest with full police honours, including a gun salute.
We learn that Lucas had proposed to Cami before his death, but she somehow could not agree. She instead kept saying she would think about it, which she regrets. Tili calls Dracu after the funeral for updates, and she thinks that there is something fishy about Bones and they should look into it.
Later, Bones and Cami plan their next move. Cami thinks that Tanase needs the Lars deal to go through since it might be his ticket out. Therefore, it is most likely he will do anything to push the deal, which gives Bones a chance to catch him in the act.
Cami wants to get involved and help Tanase retrieve the money by retrieving the laptop and helping them with decryption. Bones agrees and lets Cami go with him to meet with Tanase’s men. She has already hacked into the police and retrieved the blueprints of the precinct. Tanase shows up during the planning and agrees to follow Cami’s (now Sonia) plan.
Tanase wants the plan carried out on the same day since there is a big match happening between Romania and Hungary. There will be fewer police in the precinct since more will be guarding the stadium and the streets. Those left in the police station will be focusing on the game, giving Tanase’s people time to break in and get the laptop. Sonia will go in as a lawyer while other men dress up as police officers. Tili is in charge of the drive-away van.
At the precinct, every other police officer is distracted watching the game, but Detective Tatu continues the probe. He receives the contents of Luca’s phone from the forensic team, and inside, he finds the photo of Bones Lucas had taken when they met about meeting at the Bucharest Grand Hotel.
Dobresco, the IT officer, reports that he has found the cables needed to hack into the laptop and Tatu gives him the go-ahead to take it from the evidence locker. Tatu also gets a call from the coroner telling him that they got the wrong dental records.
After leaving Dracu and Tili in charge, Tanase heads out to watch the game at a betting casino where Lars shows up alarming Tanase. Lars lets Tanase know that he is aware of the trouble his people have caused him . Lars tells him that the product will be delivered in 48 hours and gives him a chance to pull out. Tanase assures that he will come through with the payment.
Dracu and Bones start a bar fight. The police are called in, and Tanase’s men answer, but they are delayed on the way. Tili has to step in and save them from the mob and hand them over to the “police.” the plan is on, Sonia deactivates the CCTV, Bones and Dracu are arrested and they make it into the precinct.
They discreetly find the evidence locker, but the laptop is not there. The police hostage tells them an IT person took the laptop, so they find him in the IT room.
Dracu thinks that Dobrescu had seen the contents of the laptop, so he chooses to kill him despite Sonia’s protests. They have to storm out to the police station threatening all the officers who were watching the game. The police chase after their van, but Tili arrives with the backup. After making sure they escape, Tili escapes on her motorbike, leaving the police stranded.
Back at the precinct, Tatu is rushed to the hospital after suffering a heart attack during the incident. Golescu arrives to find things in chaos. Dracu and his men not only took the laptop but also robbed the police of their phones and guns. Golescu finds a photo of Bones on Tatu’s computer and knows him from the video taken from the hotel.
At the end of the episode, Dracu and his team make it back to the hideout. Tanase knows what happened and is not happy about the outcome. Therefore, he gives the order to kill everyone after they get the contents of the laptop and leave no witnesses.
The Episode Review
This was an interesting episode as the crew embarked on a daring mission to retrieve the laptop from the police station. We are also introduced to Lars. He is a no-nonsense businessman, which adds weight to Tanase’s anxiety about the two million dollars. If Tanase fails to pay the money upon receiving of goods, his whole establishment might be compromised.
While the cartel is making waves and advancing its business steadily, the police investigation is mark-timing. This follows a similar script we have been used to when it comes to investigation cases that involve cartels and the police force. The police are always so many steps behind. In this case, they have neither identified the body in the car, found out about Cami’s disappearance, nor the connection between Bones and Luca.
The episode ends on a tense note, leaving us worried about Bones and Cami. Will they manage to escape from Dracu and Tili? Will Tili’s subtle interest in Cami make her go against Tanase’s orders? Dracu is jealous of Tili’s interest in Bones and Cami, so he is most likely to want to kill them. Conflicts escalate in this episode, laying the groundwork for the upcoming episodes.
