Birth of Sonia Lazar
Episode 2 of Subteran starts with Cami waking up at Bone’s safe house and having a nightmare about Luca’s murder. Cami asks Bone to let her go and see her son, but he insists that the only way to keep her son safe is to stay away. Before Bone leaves the safe house, he insists that Cami should stay away, as it is the only way to keep Matei safe. Cami realises that Bone knows her son’s name, which makes him even less trustworthy.
Meanwhile, the police find Cami’s burnt-up car and the body inside. They identify the car as belonging to Cami. While the chief detective Tatu wants to assume that the body burnt beyond recognition might be Cami’s, the chief prosecutor Golescu thinks that they should treat it as a missing person’s case until they get a report from forensics. Like in any missing person case, the first step is to visit the family.
Elsewhere, it is Tanase’s birthday, but Crisi is not answering her phone. Tanase is concerned, so he calls Dracu, who is just waking up beside Tili at the hotel room. Tanase asks him to follow up on the money collection since they still need the two million for the upcoming deal with Lars and to find Crisi. On the other hand, Bones removes Crisi’s sim card from her phone and throws it down a train track before heading to his crew’s house.
Bones finds everyone busy counting money. He learns that Tanase is shaking up all the distributors on money collection for the two million needed for a big deal. Bones tries to ask for more information, but the guy does not know much about the deal, so he does not provide significant information. Back at the safe house, Cami tries to find a way out, but ends up finding a laptop instead. She hacks into the laptop’s hidden file and finds photos of her, Luca, and Matei.
Detective Tatu and Prosecutor Golescu arrive at Cami’s house and question her mother. The mother says that even though it is not unusual for her to stay at work overnight, she always calls Matei to wish him a good night. Then, Golescu gets a call from the office, and he has to go back urgently. He asks Tatu to finish questioning Tatu’s mother and then look into Luca’s apartment.
Dracu questions Bones about Crisi, since he was the last person with her. Bones says that after checking Luca’s apartment and finding nothing, Crisi said she wanted to see a priest but did not want Bones to drop her off. Dracu then questions the said priest and learns that Crisi had been to him a few days earlier and was supposed to pick up a painting for Tanase’s birthday the previous night but she did not show up. Tili suggests that they investigate Luca’s apartment again maybe they will find some clues.
Golescu receives a clue from one of his colleagues. A hotel staff member took a video during the hotel evacuation after the murder, and in one of the clips, Bone is seen exiting the hotel room. They find him suspicious because he is not a guest and is not seen in any of the hotel cameras, just the video.
Detective Tatu arrives at Luca’s house while Tili and Dracu are still inside, so they hide in the bathroom. They overhear Tatu on the phone with Dracu telling him about a missing rug and a bullet hole through the wall which he deduces as a sign of a fight. Golescu asks Tatu to follow up with forensics and find out if they found rug residuals in the burnt car or if the burnt body had bullet holes. After Tatu leaves, Tili and Dracu leave too planning to question Bones again.
At the safe house, Cami scoops around and finds an arm in the freezer. Bones is keeping track of her movement through cameras on his phone and has to rush home after buying some things to help Cami change her look. Cami sets up a trap in the bathroom for Bones, giving a chance to get Bones unaware. Bones is hit on the head with a bottle and starts bleeding so he cannot fight back. Cami has found all the information she can about Bones on his laptop, including the fact that he is a police officer.
Bones comes clean about his involvement with Tanase. He is a police officer, real name Marius Roman and he is working undercover within the Tanase organisation. The hands in the freezer contain Tanase’s DNA from a person he had killed six months earlier and chopped him up. Bones cannot hand over the evidence to the police because Tanase has bought up almost everyone in the police force. He posed as a CI and roped in Luca to be his inside person since he knew he was clean and could be trusted. Bones promises to protect Cami.
Dracu gets Bone’s address from Florin and heads to the safe house with Tili. Bones feeds them another story about Crisi killing Cami because she recognised her from the hotel. Tilisi and Crisi are identical twins, so Bones’ story checks out. He says that Crisi fled to Dubai, and Bones burnt Cami’s body. Tili hears Cami singing in the bathroom. Fortunately, she does not recognise her, so Cami poses and Bone’s ex-girlfriend, Sonia Lazar.
When Bones steps into the room to get ready for Tanase’s birthday party, Cami sneaks out to check on Matei. Cami’s mother holds a wake for Luca at the apartment and Cami watches Matei sneak out through the window. Before he could go far, Tili and Dracu stop him to ask about his mother. Bones arrives in time to stop Cami from intervening. They had come to check if Bones’ story checked out. Officer Vasile goes after Matei and stops Tili and Dracu from further questioning Matei.
The episode ends at Tanase’s lavish birthday party with live music and dance. Tili shows interest in Bones and Cami which makes Dracu jealous and he almost loses his cool. Tanase steps in and stops the tension. He asks Dracu to find Crisi discreetly, since he does not want the police snooping around due to the upcoming deal with Lars. Cami overhears their conversation and tells Bones later that the cartel is looking for Crisi and they do not have much time.
The Episode Review
The episode builds into the tension of the first episode. Cami is now thrown into the cartel business, catching the eye of Tanase and his daughter, Tili. This creates an even more dangerous and complex situation for her safety. She has never been among such dangerous people, so her anxiety is easily noticeable.
The mystery surrounding Bone’s involvement with Tanase and why he wants him arrested is resolved in this episode. He is an undercover officer looking to build a strong case against Tanase. Another suspicious character is Vasile, Luca’s partner. Is he one of the dirty cops working for Tanase, or is he genuinely worried about Matei? More intriguing questions arise, leaving the viewer worried about Cami’s fate.
What is the deal with Lars, and why is it so important to Tanase? Is Golescu an honest prosecutor? His meeting with an unknown person at a hotel room raises eyebrows.
