The Blowback

Episode 2 of Study Group picks up with Han-gyeong rushing to the class to see what the fracas is all about. Upon entering, she discovers a burning bag, Hyeon-wu unconscious, and Ga-min standing over him. She swiftly extinguishes the flames as the inspector and principal arrive. They all assume Ga-min is the culprit and call him in.

White Gamin waits for the inspector and principal; Se-hyeon sneaks into the room and thanks him. Later, things take a turn for Hyeon-wu when Pi Han-ui brings him to the rooftop. Back in the office, the principal moves to expel Ga-min, but Han-gyeong defends him. She mentions that he is the victim and thinks it is unfair that Ga-min had to resort to violence to save himself. She calls out the principal in front of the inspector, causing him to feel embarrassed.

The inspector finally remembers where he had seen Han-gyeong before. He informs the principal that Han-gyeong was last year’s top performer in the teacher recruitment exam. However, she didn’t register and was disqualified. The inspector is keen to see if she can change the school and gives her a chance. Han-gyeong mentions that she will help the students start a study group, and the inspector agrees it is a good idea.

The next morning, Ga-min secretly works out before heading to school. After the incident, he and Se-hyeon grow close and start looking for people to join their study group. The principal is out to get Han-gyeong and wants the idea to fail. He gives Han-gyeong two weeks to form a group. Han-gyeong meets with Se-hyeon and Ga-min and tries to encourage them to recruit other students.

The two start putting up posters around the school, but the ridiculous rumours about Ga-min curtail their efforts. Following the fight with Hyeon-wu, Ga-min has sort of become a feared legend among the students. Many students think Ga-min will bully them into joining the study group. Most students are avoiding him and don’t want to incur Pi Han-ui’s anger.

As the week goes by, Ga-min randomly meets Geon-yeob and invites him to his study group. Unfortunately, Geon-yeob turns him down and asks why Ga-min is trying to cause trouble for those close to him.

As the days go by, Ga-min and Se-hyeon start getting discouraged by the lack of response. Simultaneously, Han-gyeong grows worried about Hyeon-wu, who has been missing school since the fight. She tries to track him down but fails. One evening after classes, Han-gyeong invites Ga-min and Se-hyeon to lift their spirits. She buys them books, pens, and food and gets to know them better.

After sharing dessert, they each go their separate ways, but Ga-min realises he accidentally left his new book in Han-gyeong’s bag.

In the meantime, Han-gyeong returns home to find Hyeon-wu and his gang broke into her house. Hyeon-wu starts rambling about Han-gyeong crossing the wrong people at school. It turns out that someone ordered Hyeon-wu to attack Han-gyeong and teach her a lesson. As she tries to reason with Hyeon-wu, she gets a call from Ga-min. Unfortunately, Hyeon-wu hits the phone from her hand, and Han-gyeong is unable to pick it up. Just when Hyeon-wu is about to pounce, Geon-yeob arrives and tries to save Han-gyeong.

The two hide in the parking lot but unfortunately, Hyeon-wu and his gang find them. Once again, Han-gyeong tries to reason with Hyeon-wu and ends up getting hit. Geon-yeon tries his best to fight the group, but he is overpowered. Fortunately, Ga-min suddenly shows up and takes on the group like the fighting pro that he is. Upon seeing that Ga-min is too strong, the gang starts to flee. However, Hyeon-wu tries to stab Ga-min, and Gyeon-yeob stops him.

Hyeon-wu starts teasing him about how his mom died, and Gyeon-yeob loses it. He attacks Hyeon-wu with a renewed vengeance, demanding to know what he knows about his mom’s death. Ga-min stops Gyeon-yeob and is shocked when the latter mentions that Pi Han Ui had something to do with Gyeon-yeob’s mom’s death. Before leaving, Gyeon-yeob warns Han-gyeong to be careful as no one can stand against Pi Han Ui at the school. He also cautions Ga-min about his study group idea.

After the incident, Han-gyeong gives Ga-min the book he forgot in her bag. She goes back to her apartment and thinks of calling the police. As she is about to make the call, one of Hyeon-wu’s gang members knocks on her door to apologise. He explains that he is under threat and has no choice.

The next day at school, Se-hyeon and Ga-min continue to feel down as no one is signing up for the study group. The episode ends with them getting one application from a girl. Surprisingly, Yusung Technical High School is a co-ed school.

The Episode Review

Can we talk about how well-coordinated the fighting scenes in this show are? Hwang Min Hyun’s effort to train and be good in these action scenes didn’t go unnoticed. Although these are only the two first episodes, Study Group is gradually gaining popularity as our top pick for the best K-Drama of 2025. It’s an absolute thrill ride, and we can’t think of many things to criticise. The show’s action scenes, choreography, acting performances, and storyline are all exceptional.

That said, the level of indiscipline at Yusung Technical High School continues to shock us. How does a student get so much power to run a mafia group in school? Pi Han Ui is quite the villain, and we can’t wait to see him in his element once the plot thickens. I am looking forward to his fighting scenes with Ga-min. It will also be exciting to see how the new student Lee Ji-woo will fit into the story. We already know Gyeon-yeob’s story, and we expect him to join the study group, eventually. Once the study group is complete, what will they do next?
