Star Wars: Tales of the Empire – Episode 4 “Devoted” Recap & Review

Devoted

In episode 4 of Tales of the Empire, set after the Clone Wars, we focus on Barriss Offee, an excommunicated Jedi responsible for bombing the Jedi temple. Once a respected Jedi, Barriss fell to the dark side, killing many Jedi and framing Ahsoka for the crime. Although exposed, she was later freed by the Empire.

In the episode, Offee is visited by Lyn Rakish, the fourth sister, representing the Empire. She offers Offee a chance to change her life’s course. Offee agrees to the deal and is immediately freed from her shackles.

Lyn escorts Offee to meet the Grand Inquisitor, where she encounters two former Jedi, Ahmer and Dante. Like Offee, Ahmer and Dante were also accused of betraying the Jedi order but were pardoned when the Empire regained control. Now, Offee, Ahmer, and Dante are to be trained as Inquisitors for the Empire.

For context, Inquisitors are a group of assassins sent to hunt down surviving Jedi after Order 66 went into effect. Ahmer suspects foul play and considers leaving, but Offee advises against it. Unfortunately, before Ahmer can leave the base, he is killed by Grand Inquisitor.

In the days that follow, the Grand Inquisitor trains Offee, impressed by the rage within her. Both Offee and Dante pass all tests, leading to a final test that requires fighting each other to the death. While Offee is hesitant, Dante sees killing Offee as his only path to survival.

However, Dante lacks Offee’s resolve, and she defeats him, securing her place in the Inquisitor force. The next day, she is introduced to her new master who happens to be Darth Vader, formerly known as Anakin Skywalker.

The Episode Review

So, after three episodes, the spotlight moves from Morgan Elsbeth to Barris Offee, the Jedi who went rogue. She was sentenced to life in prison for pulling off a terrorist attack at the Jedi Temple, slaying dozens of her own people.

But when the Empire took control back from the New Republic, Barris was turned into a hired gun. The movies left us hanging about what happened to her, so catching her story in the Empire’s saga is a real eye-opener.
