Can’t Say I Remember No At Attin
Episode 4 of Skeleton Crew begins with the group seemingly making it to At Attin. SM-33 helps land the ship, which touches down in a an abandoned playground. Turns out this is the wrong planet, but while the kids wander off on their own, believing that this could be another planet co-founded with their actual home, SM-33 initiates a babysitting protocol to look after Jod.
Jod soon finds the gold Wim has stashed, but SM-33 suddenly shows up and stops him. He points out that this planet is actually At Achrann, explaining why nothing appears to be as it should for the kids outside. The whole planet has seemingly been turned into a warzone, and the kids walk right into the heart of it.
A girl pulls them aside as the Hattan warriors patrol the area. They take cover away from the forces, waiting for the patrol to pass before heading over to the nearby school, which has been turned into the Troik headquarters.
It’s here we learn Hayna is the name of the kid that saved the gang, and apparently this planet has something called the Fallen Sanctum. According to her, there are markings that could be a key to coordinates off-planet. This is a distant place though, so the leader decides they need to prove themselves by training with the Troik.
While the kids mess about with guns and KB seems to gave a knack or shooting, Wim most certainly does not. Through all of this, Hayna and Neel hang out, where we see Neel’s kindness as he feeds a couple of hungry kids on the rooftop. For now though, the group head out, led by the leader of this tribe, who decide that they need to prove themselves in battle.
Out of the shadows steps Jod and SM-33, who returns the eopies stolen by their rivals. In exchange, he wants the kids back. With the deal done, Hayna decides the kids have proven themselves worthy and she agrees to take them to the Fallen Sanctum.
When the group make it to their destination, they find a ruined arena that holds numerous pillars. It turns out these do have coordinates over to the real At-Attin… but there’s a problem. SM-33 has completely destroyed one of the markings to make it illegible. He’s been here before and that was with his previous captain.
Fern decides to run a memory override on SM-33 and just like that, he remember At Attin. The old captain had strict instructions to destroy anyone who asked about the coordinates though and he stalks toward the kids with murderous intent. Neel though shows up and manages to save the day, just as Jod shuts off the droid.
The Episode Review
So we get a little side quest here with sprinklings of plot development, as the kids head off to a similar planet to their own, and find out that all is not as it seems. It would have been nice to see a bit more of the Hattan tribe, but it serves the purpose to get Jod and the kids reunited.
As for the series itself, there’s enough in this to keep watching for the time being but likewise, the story is painfully basic. There is a nice moment involving Fern toward the end where she shows a bit of weakness, which is a nice touch, but beyond that there’s barely any characterisation, and what’s here is spelled out. We see first-hand that Neel is kind, so we don’t need the dialogue from Hayna after reaffirming this. These small moments definitely stand out.
All that being said, Skeleton Crew is a fun romp and will certainly appeal to a younger audience.
