For it being a debut album, there’s so much to like. Grunge influences do not bombard but come in steadily as Sprints try to conquer their fears on Letter To Self. The band breaks sweat too and delivers such an all-rounder, a record which creates such an electric atmosphere that doesn’t dissipate.

There is so much anger on this record, with gritty vocals and the instrumentals increasing the intensity, pushing the band to the forefront. They definitely know how to play their instruments fully, showing their adeptness, and marking their territory.

Lyrically, darkness floods the light, and the pessimism starts to overflow. This isn’t a bad thing, as we’re all going through such torment in a world going mad. The band is restless and wants to see change, an altered world, where hope carries weight and hearts do not burst easily.

Sprints do sound like a band from the 90s grunge scene, but they seem more equipped and musically intelligent. While their sound isn’t for everyone, it does deliver moments when the music has the power to ingrain every aspect of life.

‘Ticking’ starts the album off with a good chord progression, and the vocals come in slowly. The sound gives off pessimistic vibes, though the band are looking to see out their lives properly.

‘Shaking Their Hands’ begins with grungy intentions, offering yet another pessimistic and guitar-driven track which explodes into a piece of anarchy.

‘Shadow Of A Doubt’ opens with less urgency, but there’s vigour in the vocals. Again, the lyrics are so intelligent and poetic. There’s structure here too, and the song bursts into action eventually.

Sprints delivers a record which sounds daring and timely. It’s an outstanding debut album.
