Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf – Season 1 Episode 25 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Miracle’s Path and Journey’s Continuation

Episode 25 of Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf begins with Lawrence, Holo, Elsa, and Evan returning to Tereo’s Village’s (Tereo’s) church. They re-used the underground exit to reach the hidden shrine location.

What details does Holo uncover about Tereo Village’s confrontation with Enberch Town’s people? What does Elsa want to do?

Lawrence and Holo head to the church’s top floor. Evan shows Lawrence a chalice Lawrence wanted him to retrieve for their plan. Lawrence and Holo observe Enberch Town’s (Enberch’s) people conversing with Tereo’s people. One of Enberch’s people throws a statue of Truyeo on the ground.

Holo informs Lawrence, Elsa, and Evan about what’s happening during this exchange. She says Enberch’s people want Tereo’s people to light this Truyeo statue on fire. Holo confirms Enberch’s higher-ups will declare Tereo pagan if Tereo’s people refuse to comply. Elsa tells Holo she wants to confront both groups.

Lawrence, Holo, and Evan understand.

What is Bishop Mendez angry about? How does Elsa respond to Mendez’s comments?

The four confront Tereo and Enberch’s people, specifically Bishop Mendez of Enberch. Mendez argues his people have been suffering from a “curse” despite following a true religion. He’s not pleased that Tereo’s people who’ve followed a fabricated deity haven’t been affected by this curse.

One of Mendez’s men shows Elsa a document. Mendez says he wants to rebuild a holy church of true faith in Tereo. Elsa argues she’s met one of God’s divine messengers. She says God has shown her a true path. Mendez demands Elsa show proof.

Holo and Evan head somewhere. Elsa walks toward Mendez. She knows it was a mistake to have Tereo’s people worship Truyeo. Yet, Elsa argues that Truyeo was one of God’s miracles.

How does Evan contribute to Lawrence’s God Miracle plan? Does Mendez declare Tereo’s church legitimate?

Mendez and the others turn their attention toward Evan. Evan is standing on top of a pile of flour bags. Wheat grows from the flour bags, much to everyone’s shock. The flour bags stored in other carts undergo a similar process. Everyone bows before Evan and suddenly the wheat that grew disappears.

Elsa confronts Mendez and asks him to confirm this whole situation is not the devil’s doing. She presents Mendez with the chalice Lawrence suggested they use for this plan. Elsa wants Mendez to bless the chalice and explains why he should do that. Mendez blesses the chalice and Elsa asks Mendez to take the chalice to Evan.

One of Mendez’s men gives Evan the chalice. Evan heads to every cart present in Tereo. He stabs the wheat bags and collects the flour stored within them. While he’s doing that, Elsa states that this is God’s miracle truth.

Elsa argues if Mendez has a counterargument against this, she’d love for him to demonstrate a true miracle himself. Mendez yields and says this is a true miracle. He declares Tereo’s church legitimate.

How does Lawrence resolve Tereo’s money issues?

We cut away to Holo and Lawrence observing the situation. Holo reminds Lawrence that he must resolve Tereo and Enberch’s money problem. Lawrence confronts Riendott. He tells Riendott that he and Riendott must settle both towns’ money problems.

Lawrence and Riendott head to Tereo’s main circle location. He tells Riendott to keep all the wheat. Riendott refuses. Lawrence asks Riendott how much money he’d like in exchange for the wheat. Riendott’s nervous about buying the wheat so Lawrence offers him a proposal.

Lawrence wants Riendott to persuade Mendez to let Tereo’s people sell wheat under Mendez’s name. Riendott says he’ll try. Then, Lawrence says he’d like Riendott to be his ally since he fears Enberch’s people will meddle with Lawrence’s business. Lawrence says they’ll return the money once that business goes swimmingly.

Lawrence says he wants to dissolve Father Franz’s (Franz’s) contract. Tereo’s people object but Lawrence tells them that Enberch will continue resenting them if they don’t do this. Lawrence shares other things to get Tereo’s people and others to comply. Then, Lawrence asks the baker to prepare specific goods.

Was Lawrence’s “God Miracle” plan a success? What happens before Lawrence and Holo depart Tereo?

Then, we cut away to Lawrence, Holo, Elsa, and Evan eating biscuits somewhere. Elsa tells Lawrence the biscuits they’re eating are selling well in Enberch. She argues they’ll be able to pay back Enberch and turn a profit from this. Lawrence explains why he went with this idea.

He confirms they made a profit-sharing contract with Riendott and Mendez. Holo also confirms they went through most flour bags and noticed a lack of poison in them. Lawrence suggests he and Holo depart. Before they go, Evan tells Lawrence that Tereo’s people entrusted Evan with handling future negotiations with Enberch.

Elsa chimes in and confirms many people are stopping by the church now. She wants to continue her duties at the church. The four head outside. Lawrence asks Elsa about a question she shared his way in a past episode. Elsa says she’d like to respond to Lawrence’s question.

She speculates Franz wanted to confirm the existence of pagan gods because it’d help him know if God exists. Elsa argues this is why she didn’t want Enberch to refute the existence of Truyeo. Sem, Lima, and Tereo’s other residents confront Lawrence and Holo.

They thank Lawrence and his friends for their assistance. Lawrence and Holo depart from Tereo.

How does Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf Season 1 end?

While traveling Lawrence and Holo chat about their current food supply and previous Tereo activities. Lawrence tells Holo they’ll be heading to Lenos Town. Holo teases Lawrence and Lawrence retaliates by mentioning a future business deal. She asks Lawrence what the business is about. Holo lays next to Lawrence and smiles.

Then, we cut away to a future timeline. In this scene, we see Holo chatting with the child who has appeared throughout the anime’s run. The kid wants to hear more about Holo’s tale. Holo refuses to share more details and explains why.

Then, a man, who we assume is Lawrence, arrives. The child heads to Lawrence and says Holo can share more details about her journey later. Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf Season 1 ends with Holo saying her story is far from finished.

The Episode Review

Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets The Wise Wolf Season 1 is officially done, and boy, it was a long journey. This episode was a nice way to wrap up matters between Tereo and Enberch’s citizens. Seeing Elsa, Evan, Lawrence, and Holo work together was astonishing. Every character played their roles in this scheme brilliantly.

While more back-and-forth scenes between our heroes and their antagonists would’ve been stellar, seeing supporting characters hold their own is always a pleasant sight. With Season 2 announced, we’re optimistic the newer supporting characters will have similar shoes to fill.

Additionally, this episode gives fans touching segments between Holo and Lawrence. This happened near the episode’s closing portions. From Holo and Lawrence’s pleasant chat in Lawrence’s wagon to Holo’s conversation with the small child, fans will love the down-to-earth moments sprinkled throughout this season finale.

Next to having decent visuals, this was a remarkable way to close the book on this merchant and wolf duo’s quest (for now). I’m excited to see what awaits them in Lenos Town!
