Special Ops: Lioness – Season 2 Episode 1 Recap & Review

Beware The Old Soldier

Episode 1 of Special Ops: Lioness season 2 begins with masked men attacking the home and killing the father and son before kidnapping the mom. The next morning, Joe tries to make breakfast for her family, but she burns the pancake.

Her husband and daughters tease her about being a terrible cook. To salvage breakfast, Neal takes the family to the local waffle house. They happily down their pancakes, but Joe is distracted by the news of the kidnapping of the Congresswoman, Hernandez. It turns out that Hernandez has been pushing for legislation that allows US military forces to be deployed on US soil. This poses an additional threat to the growing illegal immigration problem in the country. So far, the media reports that a cartel has taken Hernandez hostage.

We circle back to Hernandez’s house and the place is buzzing with police activity. Agent Kyle arrives and learns that Hernandez has a tracker on her. The tracker shows that she is being held in a house in Ojinaga, Mexico. Kyle calls his boss and updates him on the latest. Meanwhile, Kaitlyn is summoned to the White House. Her husband advises her to look into Mexico’s exports, particularly oil. They are sure that the cartel didn’t plan the attack on their own.

At the White House, Kaitlyn talks to Byron. Byron already has Kyle and his team ready to save the Congresswoman. He updates the President and his advisors on the case. There is the minor issue of whether to make the rescue messy. Bryon shares that he thinks China is responsible for the attack. Chin wants the US to make a scene while saving the Congresswoman on Mexican soil.

This way, they can use this as an excuse to invade Taiwan. Joe interrupts the meeting and is asked about picking a new asset. She asks for three months but gets only three weeks. With the elections coming soon, the President wants more trophies for his political career. They also ask Joe to help them collect data about the local cartel boss. Joe is hesitant, as that is not part of her job. Kaitlyn intervenes and promises to get the work done.

Joe is not happy to get the Grey team, but Byron and Kaitlyn advise her to make dew. Byron offers to deal with any other issues that might come up. Kaitlyn asks Joe to start rounding her team. Later, Joe calls Neal and explains she won’t be home in a while. She is worried about the outcome of the operation but can’t discuss the details with Neal. After the call, she meets up with the extraction team led by Cody. They quickly get ready to head to Mexico.

Once in Mexico, they use the tracker on Hernandez to find her. She is already on the move as the cartel is driving her deeper into the country. The team intercepts the car and an intense gunfight ensues. After securing the Congresswoman, the team make their way to the exfil location. However, the cartel and local police are upon them. They already have eyes in the sky and at least six to ten cars following them. Kyle has no clear Plan B on what to do as they change their original plans. Another intense gunfight ensues as the team confronts the cars following them. They manage to take them down.

To escape the country, the team is advised to use a dirt road and head towards the river at the border. On the way, the Mexican military cars start following them and Joe asks for air support. The team drives into the river and starts taking fire from the military cars. Thankfully, air support arrives in time to back them up. The team quickly gets out of the car but they lost one of their members. They swim to the other side of the border as everyone takes into account how close they came to dying.

Later, Neal watches the news and sees the rescue of the Congresswoman. Even though the faces of the soldiers are blurred, he is able to recognise his wife. He decides to focus on making dinner, but Kate continues to watch the news.

Back at the river, the Congresswoman asks Joe to give her vigilante justice. She then talks to Cody about Dean’s death. She then confronts Kyle for making them go into an operation without a Plan B. Kyle reminds her that dying is the price they signed up for in this job. He also questions if she has got rusty since she has been out of the field for a while. Joe calls her family and tries to hide her tears as she talks to her daughters.

The Episode Review

Special Ops: Lioness returns for season 2 with more action, bringing the heat as promised. Joe’s emotional breakdown as she talks to her kids shows she is struggling with some parts of the job. She tells Kyle that she has a family and Joe doesn’t want to return to her family in a body bag. Seeing Dean die right before her eyes is not easy.

Having to tell the Congresswoman that the cartel killed her family is also not easy. Even though Joe comes off as a hardened elite soldier, she holds her family close. The recent events trigger her emotional side as she worries about being there for her own family.
