Singer/songwriter Sophie Swanson has set the tone for emo on her release Social Burnout. The enigmatic musician plays with rhythms and lyrics, creating a musical journey which is captivating. She’s got a voice of reason too, vocals that are pristine. She’s also got a good range when it comes to lifting the sound. Social Burnout is her statement of intent, a catalogue brimming with emotion and spirit, though underneath it all is a current hitting against the grain.

There is sonic value to the whole record, as the acoustic guitar spreads wisdom, and those instrumentals increase the value too. The lyrical content bridges the gap between hope and grit. The sound can become gloomy, but that doesn’t throw the album off into obscurity.

There are 7 songs on the record. ‘Bored & Lonely’ is an acoustic dream, with lyrics that trigger the emotions, naturally bringing out emotive tendencies. The woman wants love to carry her through, and she wants to be heard.

‘Hope Boys Cry’ develops as it plays, gifting us a song of pure emo drama. It’s another brooding song, grazing against hope. Those grooves and tones are beneficial to the song’s progression.

‘Social Burnout’ creates havoc in the mind. Swanson dishes out her desire to find a feeling of total euphoria by getting rid of an impractical lover. Rock influences are spread heavily on this track.

Sophie Swanson has crafted such a sad album, but one that grows with every acoustic element.
