Somewhere Boy- Season 1 Episode 3 Recap & Review

Episode 3

Episode 3 of Somewhere Boy begins in the present timeline when Danny successfully gains access to Aaron’s phone. Thereafter, he searches the internet for information about his mother’s accident. He locates the monster and wishes to visit him. Sue makes sure Danny doesn’t go out alone despite Danny’s insistence that he would like to.

Sam invites Aaron to watch soccer and hang out at the nearby bar. The news makes Sue happy. Danny offers to go along because he sees an opportunity to go after the monster.

Aaron is reluctant to take Danny. However, Sue persuades him to do so. Danny confesses his true motives—to meet the man who murdered his mother—while they are still in the car. Aaron forbids him from going to Mead Farm, where the man resides.

Aaron makes an effort to avoid Danny, whom he fears his friends will find strange, once he meets up with his friends. Danny leaves as Aaron is occupied watching the game with his companions, who aren’t fond of him all that much.

Danny was earlier seen taking the spade bit from Paul’s shop that he and Sue had only recently learned about. Sue isn’t certain if Danny stole it, but Paul thinks he did.

Danny travels to Mead Farm by bus. Sam criticizes Aaron for treating Danny harshly even though it wasn’t his fault. Aaron runs after Danny shortly after realizing he’s gone.

In the past timeline, Steve is seen wishing to take Danny to the hospital after Danny severely hurt his arm. They decide against going because Danny is extremely frightened of the outdoors.

In the present timeline, before Danny can get to the property, Aaron finds him. Aaron agrees to take him to the farm because the former is adamant that he merely wishes to see Mark. Once Mark spots them, both the boys sprint for the car, breaking his gate in the process. When they refuse to stop, Mark says he is going to notify the cops and takes a picture of their license plate. The youngsters express regret and swear to make amends. After giving them a chance to fix it, Mark calls them back on Monday to begin the repairs.

Paul expresses concern for Danny’s mental health. Having their little ones around Danny makes him feel uneasy. Sue, however, silences him. Meanwhile, Danny consoles Aaron and claims to be familiar with dealing with monsters when they return home.

The Episode Review

The episode and the entire series is simultaneously tragic gorgeous, clever, and blue. The show successfully juggles several themes while giving each one equal attention. It’s about getting back on track and blending in. It talks about monsters—both metaphorical and real. And it sheds light on trauma as well as abuse.

Gribben’s portrayal of Danny is the show’s standout performance, and he expertly blends the resilience of a person brought up by a survivalist dad with the frailty of a young child dealing with the trials and tribulations of adulthood for the very first time.
