Somewhere Boy- Season 1 Episode 1 Recap & Review

Episode 1

Somewhere Boy begins with a depiction of Danny, a young man who is adjusting to his dad, Steve, taking his own life. The two apparently shared a lonely existence in a deteriorating home. The day following Steve’s suicide, Sue, Danny’s aunt, arrives and takes Danny with her. Her own family consists of five people. She is currently wedded to Paul and also has kids, Joe and Tammy, who she had with him after divorcing her first partner.

We learn that Aaron, Sue’s oldest child, is a product of her first relationship. Sue has given Aaron the job of being a good friend to Danny. Given that he has trouble with his own teenage years and has neither friends nor a girlfriend, he doesn’t seem all that interested in helping Danny.

Danny is seen going through a difficult time because the world around him seems to be confusing him. Since the demise of his mother, Steve had been the sole human being he had seen in a long time. We find out that Danny suffered abuse from Steve through an unpleasant confrontation. The abuse was not physical but rather he confined him into their home’s four walls. Steve scared Danny from a young age, saying there are monsters outdoors. Danny is therefore hesitant and afraid to step outside.

For Danny, the external world appears to be a brand-new universe. Additionally, Danny frequently has dreadful dreams in which the monsters present outdoors harm him and his dad. Thereafter, flashbacks enable us to understand that Steve wasn’t really a bad person. He was never able to get over losing his wife and he was experiencing grief. His existence, and then Danny’s, lost all of its colors after Steve’s wife passed away.

Danny faces his fear and goes outside. Aaron completely overlooks the fact that Danny is outdoors while conversing with Paul inside the kitchen. Danny wanders away while he searches for the monsters that Steve told him about. However, he doesn’t come across any. He is unable to locate the house when he returns. Thereafter, he enters Sue’s neighbor’s home in a state of panic.

Sue brings Danny back to the house after locating him. Danny is traumatized by the experience. Following that, Aaron understands that his cousin requires special care.

The Episode Review

The episode skillfully lays the groundwork and paints a clear picture of Danny’s trauma. The creators do a good job of portraying how lonely Danny was as a young child and how it eventually became normal for him. The effects of the trauma, which lead to PTSD, are also well depicted. From the first episode, viewers have a clear understanding of Danny’s situation, and you can’t help but sympathize with him.

The show does an excellent job of not demonizing Danny’s father, who caused him the trauma. We quickly learn that he did the things he did because he was afraid of losing Danny after his wife died. Although it does not justify his actions, it does give him a strong motive.

Old music and movies were introduced to Danny when he was a kid, and since then he has based his way of living depending on them. We catch glimpses of these films and hear hints of these songs during flashbacks as well as background music. His fascination with old music and films is skillfully conveyed in the episode.
