Snowpiercer – Season 4 Episode 10 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Last Stop

This is it folks, the final ever episode of Snowpiercer. It’s been a wild ride over the years and now, we pick up with Layton and the others fighting their way up the train. These guys have had quite the wild ride, and by now they’re all adept at taking the train from villains. The group continue to move forward, but Nima tries to high-tail it out by zipping up the sub-train.

Mel and Alex make it back to the cockpit… but the console has been ripped out. The engine is gone, and Big Alice is now a slave to Snowpiercer, so there’s not much they can do. Alex knows the train inside out though and tries to rewire things to get them back on track. However, Mel distracts her when she finds out that Wilford is dead. Mel wants to talk but Alex decides to act like an actual human and tells her they don’t have time for that. Good on you, girl!

How does Nima stall for time?

The pair discuss whether they could hit the brakes and execute a manual shutdown. However, they’re near the coast so may not be able to do that.

Layton and the others are 45 cars ahead of Nima and his men, but some of Nima’s goons believe they should use kids to slow them down. Nima, thankfully, refuses. As he does, Layton and co. catch up to Mel and Alex. Layton promises to clear the way for Mel, who knows how to disarm the rocket.

Time is of the essence though, as Nima decides to just go right off the tracks and start sliding across the ice. They don’t have a lot of time to get this done, so Mel deduces that they could sever comms to the engine so Nima can’t launch from there. He’d have to come to them.

Ruth catches up to Nima in his office, who wants to use Ruth as the enforcer to keep people in check. He’d surrender the trains (minus the engine for obvious reasons) and knows he’s not cut out to lead. He thinks Ruth can calm all of this down by deciding to work with him.

What’s going on with the sub-train?

Layton and the others make it into the sub train but it’s rigged to go off with sleeping gas. Layton believes they can use this to their advantage, while Ruth makes her choice and joins the rebellion. She saw nothing but doubt in Nima’s eyes and knows that the Rocket will kill them all if they don’t work quickly. She rallies the troops and strengthens the forces.

Josie is starting to lose control through all of this, and Layton finds her beating some guy bloody. She’s lusting for blood and Layton tries, in vain, to talk her down. Josie eventually does catch up to Dr Headwood and threatens her with a knife.

Layton uses the sleeping gas  to send cannisters of gas up the sub-train to take out the guards further along the carriages.

With all of them knocked out, some of the group don disguises. Among them is Till, who joins the rest of Nima’s goons as they head down to the market to try and quell the rebellion that’s been sparked up thanks to Ruth’s words.

What happens with the rocket?

Layton and the others are stalled slightly by a breach in the carriage, but with a former Breakman in Boki, they manage to fix it up. One of the Admiral’s stormtroopers arrives though, but Layton beats him down.

As the group get closer, Nima starts his countdown to launch the rocket. As the timer counts down, Mel and Alex attempt to disarm the rocket. Nima suspects something is up though and comes in with a gun, demanding Mel and Alex stop.

Unfortunately, they can’t stop the rocket, which ends up launching after all. Nima lets himself freeze to see this experiment go forward, while the rest of the group watch in horror as the rocket launches… and then falls and explodes. They manage to save the day after all.

How does Snowpiercer end?

Layton returns to Josie, who hasn’t killed Headwood after all. She stopped when she noticed her cradling a pair of shoes. She decided not to kill her, having not lost her humanity after all.

As for Mel, she heads to the Snowpiercer cockpit with Javi and somehow, across ice, the train manages to glide round effortlessly off-track? Anyway, Mel gets on the tannoy and decides they’re going to return to track (which they do off-screen) and return to New Eden.

The data is inconclusive over how long this hot pocket is going to last, but for now the gang are going to do their best to survive. While most stay behind in New Eden, others decide to leave, like Javi. For the most part though, we get our happy ending.

The Episode Review

So in the end season 4 is basically a season of turning in one great big circle back to where we ended up in season 3. Honestly, the ending last season pretty much solidified everything and rounded things out with an ambiguous but enjoyable conclusion to the show.

Don’t get me wrong, parts of this have been fun but it’s also a completely unnecessary 10 episodes we’ve just received. Everybody is basically back where they started again, albeit with more of them in New Eden. And one could argue that now they need extra mouths to feed, they’re going to have to work extra hard to try and sustain New Eden, and the lack of people killed in the finale just makes the whole thing feel very underwhelming.

The whole rocket malarkey is over super quick too and it’s resolved in a pretty naff way. Nima has been a terrible enemy, and completely overshadowed by the Admiral and Wilford, who are both much more competent and dangerous. With both of them gone, it’s clear there’s a hole in the series that can’t be filled by anybody else.

Sometimes shows do better when they’re let go and Snowpiercer is a great example of this, especially after what we’ve received here.
