The Dive
Episode 7 of Silo season 2 starts with Bernard bringing Lukas into a secret room, promising that he’s going to see something that only a few people have had access to in the past. As he unlocks the door and invites him in, he finds himself in a strange room. Lukas is verified as the Shadow and he’s told to familiarize himself with the Legacy.
Following Bernard, he’s shown a room full of relics from the “old world”. There’s a star constellation, books and even pictures. Everything Lukas can see is also stored digitally too, on an iPad. Bernard actually looked for answers when he first discovered all of this and the only thing he learned was that the Silo was created 350 years ago but nothing about why they’re here. They need to break Salvador’s code but Bernard warns that this knowledge is worse than the rebellion itself. It could destroy everything.
Meanwhile, Knox and Shirley work together, rallying the troops and preparing to strike back against the authorities in the Silo. Part of that comes from sending a rocket up high into the Silo, which explodes in mid-air and sends out numerous slips of paper. What’s on this paper? Well, the notes demand answers over why IT is lying and exactly how Meadows died.
This is then followed up by Knox and Shirley shutting off power completely, save for IT, which is done intentionally to turn the mob against them, just like Bernard did to Mechanical. Its an ingenious move, all things considered, and it sees Bernard scrambling for refuge.
He gets nowhere when he tries to bargain with Carla, while Camille decides Sims should wait for Bernard to come to him so they can work on their own terms and get to the bottom of this IT malarkey.
Bernard shows up to see Carla and demands to know about the gunpowder that Mechanical have. Carla tries to drive a hard bargain but it doesn’t work with Bernard, who eventually walks away and briefs the police, telling them that Paul has been held hostage and forced into saying what he did. For now, all radio communication has been disabled. He points out that they’re under attack and tells them all to keep the peace, while judicial will take over anything rebellion-related. Naturally, this causes friction among all of the officers.
Speaking of Paul, he learns about the plot for poisoning the food – and where those orders are coming from. Apparently, there’s been another note come through with the new plan being to kill both Knox and Shirley. Paul decides to bring them into custody, for their own safety.
Elsewhere, Bernard marches in to see Sims and demands his search warrant. However, Sims has the high-ground here and he refuses. He’s given years of his life to the Silo and is shocked when he finds out Lukas is his new Shadow. In fact, Bernard continues and brings up that Camille is the reason the rebels escaped, before eventually turning and leaving.
Down in Mechanical, Shirley desperately tries to get a message sent over to judicial seclusion, where Carla is. She’s adamant she needs to do more for her but the others believe this is a lost cause. Very few – if any – of the souls that end up in seclusion have made it back.
In the cafeteria, the group find out that one of their own, May, was forced into poisoning the food. She was blackmailed, with her mum’s health hanging in the balance. Knox warns that she’s going to be given some tough jobs going forward, and probably a bit of grief from the others, but she’s not being sent to the mines.
Lukas returns to Bernard, having seemingly cracked the cypher. Turns out they’re numbers, not letters, and one in particular – 77. In order to validate all of this and find out what it means, they need a book that’s over 140 years ago. And Bernard has just what they need, in a book called the Wizard of Oz.
Sims speaks to Camille about her letting Knox and Shirley escaping, and he’s not happy. He sees this as a betrayal but Camille believes they need to play both sides. Sims though, demands that they no longer keep secrets from one another¬
Meanwhile, Juliette preps herself for the dive. She gets some waterproof wire but she needs to be careful. Solo explains that Juliette needs to be brought back up slowly given the pressure, but she doesn’t believe him. That is, until Solo pleads with his life, pointing out that he needs help to prevent him from messing everything up.
His piteous display is enough for Juliette to agree, but she’s not happy about it. She descends down into the deep and works with Solo to try and get the generator working. Unfortunately, everything goes awry when the tubing fails and Juliette finds herself scrambling for air. She rushes up and just about makes it, although it’s definitely touch and go for a while.
However, there are more alarming matters at hand here. When Juliette returns to the levels above water, she finds spatters of blood and Solo is nowhere to be found. It would appear that there’s someone else in this Silo with them. But who?
As the episode closes out, we cut back to Bernard one more time. He realizes that he can use Martha’s relationship with Carla as collateral and make her betray the others in Mechanical.
The Episode Review
The screw is well and truly turning now and while the rebels have the upper-hand for the time being, it wouldn’t surprise me if Bernard exploits this weakness between Martha and Carla for his own doing. Lukas is also playing with fire here and while he’s excitedly looking through for answers, someone like Bernard could easily kill him for discovering the truth sooner than he should.
Season 2 has been a decent watch, although it’s undoubtedly been super slow too. The drama with Juliette has been padded out, and although the politics in our Silo are interesting, it’s similarly also quite ponderous too and could easily have been sharpened up.
However, there’s undoubtedly some great atmosphere and stand-out moments here too, so we’ll have to wait and see where this one goes next!
