Shy – Season 2 Episode 6 Recap & Review

Nothing Is Permanent

Episode 6 of Shy Season 2 begins with Kufufu explaining her train-centric plan to Teru and her friends. Teru notices people on the train and is concerned for their safety. She and Ai confront Kufufu on the train and ask her to stop the train. Kufufu refuses. Pepesha warns Teru there’s another train up ahead. She wants Teru and Ai to stop the train.

Meanwhile, Pepesha plans to switch the tracks. Kufufu departs and Teru jumps in front of the train and attempts to stop it. Pepesha arrives at the track’s switch and Kufufu appears with bombs by her side. Kufufu uses the bombs to destroy some of the tracks. She teases Pepesha more and lowers Pepesha’s morale.

Teru tells Pepesha to pull the track lever. Pepesha pulls the lever and Piltz tosses a long ribbon toward Pepesha and Teru. Teru, Pepesha, and Piltz prevent the train from falling into a large hole using their combined strength and Piltz’s ribbon. The three girls and Ai confront Kufufu. Piltz opens one of the train’s doors.

She informs the others that the train only has mannequins inside it. Kufufu laughs and jokes about the situation she put our heroes through. She views this stunt as a comedy and finds comedic scenarios like it exciting. An incomplete lifeform falls out of Kufufu’s pocket. Kufufu says she wants to find a heart for it. She grabs Pepesha and Pepesha attacks Kufufu.

The lifeform protects Kufufu from Pepesha’s attack. Pepesha tells Teru, Piltz, and Ai to head to the tower. She plans to defeat Kufufu alone. Kufufu lets Teru and the others go because she only wants to fight Pepesha. While Teru and her friends head to the tower, Piltz confronts Teru about her decision to leave Pepesha behind.

Teru describes Kufufu’s internal suffering. She speculates that Pepesha wants to fight Kufufu alone because she may have a way to mend Kufufu’s broken heart. Ai confronts Teru about this situation and wonders if there’s a way to save all the Amarariruku members. Ai says she initially planned to kill Utsuro when she arrived at the tower.

Then, Ai explains the history behind her family’s two katanas, Purity and Nihil. Ai says these blades brought peace to Soga Village but something happened one day that shattered that peace. Additionally, Nihil went missing on the same day. She argues her younger twin sister, Mai (who we know as Utsuro) caused this. Then, we enter a flashback.

It’s set in Soga village and dates back a few years ago. Mai and Ai’s master lectures Ai and Mai about Purity, Nihil, and why both blades must exist. Then, Mai and Ai head near a river. Ai participates in some training and discovers a wounded bird in the forest. She brings the bird to Mai and the two take it home to treat it.

Ai notices Mai’s upset because the bird is injured. The two help the bird recover from its wounds and set it free. The next day, Ai sees Mai lecturing boys about bugs. Ai tells Mai she should focus on training and rambles about why it’s important. Mai doesn’t give Ai a proper response so Ai attempts to train Mai herself. Mai accidentally harms Ai and checks if Ai’s okay seconds later.

Ai leaves the area with tears in her eyes. Ai heads to a bathhouse and argues her shinobi skills aren’t on par with Mai’s. She visits her master’s quarters. Ai eavesdrops on Mai’s discussion with their master. Mai argues Soga Village should be destroyed. She believes the era of shinobi is over. Ai confronts Mai outside, asking her questions about her desire to destroy Soga Village.

Mai argues why they should move forward with that plan and uses a recent village fire incident to support her stance. We cut away to Ai sitting in a tree. Ai falls from the tree but Tokimaru rescues her. Tokimaru introduces himself to Ai and shares his goals with her. Although Ai’s unsure about having him around, she makes a deal with Tokimaru.

Ai and Tokimaru head toward a spot in Soga Village. They encounter Mai who is sitting next to a bear. Ai introduces Tokimaru to Mai and the four have tea together. Ai says Mai became happier when Tokimaru entered the fold. Some time passes. Soga Village is suffering from a fire outbreak. Ai confronts Mai, who killed their master and bear companions.

Mai starts rambling and eventually stabs Ai in the chest with a sword. Mai departs. In the present, Ai is unsure how Mai ended up in this predicament. However, Ai tells Teru and Piltz that she must slay Mai since it’s a part of Soga Village’s code. Nonetheless, Ai wants to see if there is another option. Teru understands and argues there might be another way.

Before they continue their travels, Inori, the angelic Amarariruku member arrives. The episode ends with Inori planning to fight our heroes.

The Episode Review

Shy Season 2 episode 6 gives fans solid information about Utsuro, this season’s big bad. We receive intel about her affiliation with Ai and why the Soga Village residents want Ai to exterminate her. Based on the ring she wore in the flashback, viewers can assume Stigma had a hand in this Soga Village fire incident. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to see this theory brought to light soon.

Regardless, fans will appreciate Bukimi Miki (the author) for giving Utsuro a compelling and thoughtful backstory. It’s on par with the tale she offered fans in Season 1 with Pepesha’s mother, Tzveta. Speaking of, it appears a thrilling battle will happen between Pepesha and Kufufu. However, like the battle with Tzveta, we can expect Pepesha to use her words more than her fists.

Although Shy’s “talk no jutsu-like” resolutions aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, it’ll be interesting to see if Pepesha’s words can reach a crazy person like Kufufu. Only time will tell if that’ll be the case. Also, this episode gave fans some incredible heroic action to observe. Teru’s train-stopping situation will remind folks of Tobey Maguire’s iconic train-stopping stunt in Spider-Man 2

Overall, this was a fun chapter of Shy Season 2. It gives fans a nice mix of action-packed and informative content. I’m excited to learn more about Inori’s character in the next chapter.
