Shy – Season 2 Episode 12 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Fare Thee Well

Episode 12 of Shy Season 2 begins with a news reporter updating the viewers around the area about the city’s current happenings. Stardust calls Century and updates him on the citizens’ current status.

Do Doki, Kufufu, and Inori escape from Japan? What’s going on with Teru, Mai, Ai, and Tokimaru?

Meanwhile, Doki tries to fight Mianlong. Kufufu interrupts Doki’s fight with Mianlong. She insists they retreat to Amarariruku’s headquarters and argues Stigma is waiting for them. Before Kufufu departs with Inori and Doki, Pepesha, Piltz, and Mianlong stop Kufufu. Kufufu tells Doki that she won’t escape with them to the headquarters.

Doki and Inori escape. Pepesha calls Unilord and updates her on their situation. Meanwhile, Shrimpy calls Teru. Teru and her comrades are in the air and are about to land on a rooftop. Shrimpy tells Teru that no one died or suffered injuries. Teru thanks Ai, Mai, and Tokimaru for helping her achieve this. Teru, Ai, Mai, and Tokimaru land on a rooftop.

Ai and Mai hug each other and share heartfelt remarks. Tokimaru chimes in and acknowledges his regrets to Mai. Ai tells Tokimaru not to feel bad since they can all live happily in Soga Village (Soga).

Why can’t Mai return to Soga Village? What does Mai present Teru with and what is the item’s significance?

Mai tells Ai, Tokimaru, and Teru that she can’t return to Soga. She drops Nihil and her body starts withering. Mai tells Ai that her heart is a part of the black orb. Since the black orb is gone, Mai argues she will cease to exist. Mai knew this would be her fate since joining Amarariruku.

Nonetheless, Mai is happy she got to be with Ai and Tokimaru again. Mai confronts Teru about her world experiences as a shinobi. After that, Mai stabs her heart with her finger. Mai tells Teru she wants to leave Teru with her heart and wish. She explains how Stigma’s “ring of hearts” system works to Teru.

Mai grabs a new “heart ring” and presents it to Teru. She says this ring possesses the power of her heart. Mai’s Utsuro gear disappears. She’s now wearing her Soga attire and falls. Ai grabs Mai before she falls to the ground.

What details does Mai reveal about the Person of Light? Does Mai die?

Mai tells Teru she met Japan’s previous hero. She refers to this hero as the “Person of Light.” Mai says she saw the Person of Light save people in a neighboring village. Through the Person of Light’s actions, Mai realized that the world doesn’t want shinobi to bury it in darkness. Mai tells Teru to never lose to the darkness and to keep the world bright.

Before Mai departs, Tokimaru transforms into a bird creature of some kind. Ai realizes Tokimaru is one of the birds Mai saved in the past. Many spiritual birds gather around Mai. Tokimaru explains that even when Mai traversed a dark path, these birds watched over her.

Mai asks Tokimaru to watch over Ai. Tokimaru takes Nihil from Mai and Mai departs from this world.

What happens during our heroes’ interview with Japan’s news reporters?

Meanwhile, several news reporters interview Century, Stardust, Piltz, and others. They ask them questions regarding the black orb, Pepesha, and other things. Century tells the reporters that without Shy (Teru), they wouldn’t have completed this mission. Teru tries speaking for herself but fumbles.

Piltz and Mianlong support Teru and discuss Teru’s leadership skills with the reporters. Then, Tojiko roams through the crowd of reporters. When Tojiko sees Teru, she asks Teru to share encouraging words to keep Japan’s population at ease. Teru shares her speech with the world.

Later, Teru confronts Piltz about her help at a hotel. Piltz yells at Teru for her shy habits. At the same time, Piltz tells Teru she’ll be staying in Japan for the night. Piltz says she’ll leave immediately if anything bad happens. She tells Teru she did a great job and should be proud of herself.

How does Shy Season 2 end?

Teru heads outside. Iko and Ai stumble upon Teru. Ai thanks Teru for helping her accomplish certain things. She tells Teru she’ll return to Soga to inform everyone about Mai’s happenings. Ai notices Tokimaru in the distance. She performs one of her shinobi techniques to depart from Japan.

We receive a montage of several heroes and a brief glimpse of Stigma reading a book at Amarariruku’s headquarters. We cut away to Teru and Iko walking through Japan. Teru reflects on Mai’s words about the Person of Light.

Iko thanks Teru for protecting the world and Teru says it’s no big deal. Shy Season 2 ends with a background structure enveloping the scene in a bright light.

The Episode Review

This saga of Shy is officially over. Unfortunately, Mai received the Tzveta treatment. Considering how joyous the previous episode felt toward the end, the idea of this tale ending with a similarly happy finale was out of the question.

Fortunately, Mai smiled and spent her final moments with the people she held close to her heart. Hopefully, Stigma will get his just-desserts in a future season of Shy. On that note, it’s unfortunate that Stigma didn’t have much of a presence this season. He’s this series’s big bad. It’d been lovely to receive a noteworthy scene of Stigma in this season finale. Something akin to Stigma discussing the next phase of his plan with Doki, Inori, and others would’ve been marvelous.

Seeing Kufufu get captured by Pepesha and her allies’ was a fascinating development though. We can see Pepesha, Unilord, and others interrogating Kufufu about Stigma’s plans at the start of the next season if that gets announced. It’d be a great way to delve into this series’s villain. Next to having some lovely development for Teru, this was an enjoyable way to end Shy Season 2. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long for Season 3.
