Shake Half
Episode 7 of Shoshimin: How To Become Ordinary begins with Kobato reading a book in his room. Then, Kobato receives a call from Yuki. Yuki tells Kobato she left him a message. She wants Kobato to meet her at a shop between Laroche and Ginsendo. Kobato leaves home to visit this shop.
Kobato visits the shop, purchases a meal, and eats it. Kengo notices Kobato. He tells Kobato he’s pursuing an investigation. Kengo says this investigation involves a female student at their school who got roped into joining a group. He tells Kobato this group consists of illicit drug users. Kobato isn’t interested and Kengo jokes about what he’d do to the culprits.
Kengo notices his targets are splitting up and asks Kobato to monitor them. Kobato looks at Kengo’s strange note and Yuki texts him. Yuki tells Kobato she’s behind him and Kobato’s bewildered by Yuki’s weird attire. Yuki joins Kobato and brings up an acquaintance named Isawa.
Kobato tells Yuki that drug addicts enticed Kengo’s older sister to join their group. He wonders if Yuki’s acquaintance Isawa is connected to this debacle. Yuki says Isawa was put on probation but argues that Isawa may not have done anything wrong.
Kobato shows Yuki the note Kengo left him. The note has the word “Han” on it based on the symbol. Yuki wonders if this “Han” is a person or a place. The two discuss “Han” in depth. Then, Kobato realizes there’s something off about Kengo’s note and shares what’s bothering him about it with Yuki. Kobato realizes Kengo’s drawing serves as a map and Kengo wants him to connect with the person in a specific area. He places the drawing near the map Kengo left it at. Kobato discovers where he needs to go.
After Yuki changes clothes, the two head to the spot Kengo wanted Kobato to travel to. There, Kobato meets Kengo’s girlfriend. Kobato informs her about Kengo’s activities and what he’s uncovered about her older sister. Then, Kobato departs the place and continues walking with Yuki.
Kobato returns home to read his book. Kengo calls Kobato and asks him to meet him somewhere. The two discuss Kengo’s girlfriend. Kengo tells Kobato things aren’t looking great for his girlfriend’s older sister. Kengo asks Kobato if he knows anyone from middle school who messed with drugs.
Before Kobato brings up Isawa, Kengo brings Isawa up. Kengo says Isawa was going to become this group’s leader and suspected his girlfriend’s older sister of tattling on her. Isawa came at his girlfriend’s older sister with a wrench even though she didn’t plan to rat Isawa out. Nonetheless, Kengo says her girlfriend’s older sister fears for her life. Even if she wants to leave the druggie group, Kengo says she can’t.
Kengo says he offered to help but got turned down. Regardless, Kengo thanks Kobato for accompanying him to this establishment. After that, Kobato returns home to read his book. Yuki calls Kobato. She discusses the upcoming San’yadori Festival and a shop that sells succulent candy apples with him.
Yuki asks Kobato to meet her at his place first. Kobato visits Yuki’s place the following day. Yuki’s mother answers the door, welcomes Kobato inside her home, and asks him to wait for Yuki. Yuki’s mother’s phone rings and she answers it.
After she finishes calling this unknown caller, Yuki’s mother tells Kobato someone kidnapped Yuki. Yuki’s mother tells Kobato they want five million yen in exchange for Yuki’s safety. The episode ends with Kobato looking concerned.
The Episode Review
Shoshimin: How To Become Ordinary episode 7 gives fans an interesting drug-themed case for Kobato, Kengo, and Yuki to solve. Although the case doesn’t receive as much love as prior sweet-themed ordeals, the episode’s final moments allude to more fascinating developments. Firstly, it’s strange for someone to randomly kidnap a person unintentionally.
Also, we know Yuki has ties with Isawa based on her chat with Kobato at the start. In addition to Yuki’s mother’s intel about the caller having an unmodulated voice, it’s possible Isawa’s group kidnapped Yuki. Whatever the case might be, many folks will find this drug-centric mystery more compelling than the previous dessert ones.
That aside, the episode contains some endearing moments between Yuki and Kobato. Unfortunately, the series hasn’t delved into their past lives significantly though. It’d help fans develop a deeper connection with our duo. With three episodes left, we may not receive something of that caliber.
But all in all, this episode should keep fans intrigued. Hopefully, Kobato can help Yuki escape her tense situation.
