But I Get To Keep Charlotte
Episode 6 of Shoshimin: How To Become Ordinary begins with Kobato attending a festival. Yuki follows close behind. Kobato jokes about Yuki being his younger sister. Yuki kicks Kobato in the shin. Then, Yuki tells Kobato she wants to explore the festival with him. Kobato learns one of Yuki’s former classmates whom she doesn’t admire is nearby.
Kobato and Yuki go for a stroll around the festival. They discuss how Yuki’s exam study sessions are going. Yuki wonders if it’s wise for them to be wandering this festival. Kobato argues why they should enjoy themselves at this festivity. Then, the two visit a playground. Kobato realizes it’s getting late and suggests they head home.
Then, the two discuss their Summer plans. Kobato says he doesn’t have any plans. Yuki tells Kobato she has a hunch something fantastic will happen soon. She visits Kobato’s home the following day and shows him a map featuring several snacks in town. Yuki says this map will determine her fate, at least where Summer is concerned.
Kobato rejects Yuki’s desires at first. However, Yuki finds a way to win Kobato over. Kobato promises to visit the shops with Yuki tomorrow. Tomorrow arrives. Kobato is almost at Yuki’s place. Yuki texts Kobato, telling him she can’t leave her place. She requests Kobato to buy specific items and head to her place with those items.
Kobato visits the shop Yuki told him about. He learns the shop’s low on a specific item he needs to buy. Kobato purchases what the shopowner has available and arrives at Yuki’s home seconds later. Kobato places the goods on the table and he and Yuki sit at it. Yuki receives a phone call and asks Kobato to set everything up.
She promises this won’t take long and departs to a different room. Minutes pass and Kobato wonders what’s taking Yuki so long. Kobato eats one of the Charlotte cakes and stares at the other two on the table. Kobato develops a strategy to prevent Yuki from yelling at him for eating one of the Charlotte cakes.
Kobato progresses with his second scheme. He hides all the evidence that’ll help Yuki indicate he ate the third Charlotte cake. Kobato notices his drink and argues it’ll give everything away. He tampers with his beverage. Kobato argues this will keep him in the safe zone. Then, Yuki returns and notices one of the Charlotte cakes is missing.
Kobato tells her the store was short on two cakes because she requested him to purchase four Charlotte cakes. Yuki understands. The two chat more and Yuki reaches over for some napkins. This startles Kobato. Kobato’s worried the number of napkins in the box will ruin his plan. Kobato spills his drink and Yuki helps him clean it up.
After that, Yuki informs Kobato about the cake’s filling. Yuki asks Kobato if he had the cake before and he confirms he did. Kobato reveals he ate another cake that was present in the area. Yuki asks Kobato why he did what he did. Kobato has a tough time responding to Yuki’s questions so Yuki leads the discussion.
Kobato gradually reveals the truth during their chat. Since Kobato tried deceiving Yuki, Yuki says he must attend every sweet shop with her. Before Kobato leaves, he asks Yuki how she discovered the truth. Yuki says it’s because Kobato wiped away his sweat with a tissue and shares other details that helped her solve this mystery.
The episode closes with Kobato leaving Yuki’s home.
The Episode Review
First and foremost, it’s disappointing that this episode offered another sweet-themed mystery. However, this episode holds weight compared to the previous chapter. This chapter centers its mystery around its two leads, something episode 5 didn’t do to an extent. It also shows viewers that Yuki is as competent at solving cases as Kobato.
This one also depicts Kobato as the perpetrator, something we haven’t seen thus far in this show. While some fans will argue that matters could’ve been resolved sooner via a short discussion, others will resonate with Kobato’s decision to keep things under wraps. No one likes to admit when they’ve done something wrong to someone they care for.
Considering how close Kobato and Yuki are to each other, it makes sense for Kobato to develop a scheme around this debacle. Yet, like previous chapters, it’s upsetting that we didn’t get a case surrounding the boy Yuki wanted to avoid at the festival. A mystery surrounding that debacle would’ve been more engaging and intense than the one this episode provided.
Regardless, some viewers will walk away from this one semi-entertained.
