This was the prequel series nobody asked for to a classic British gangster movie. Sexy Beast was one of the best movies in its genre, and it worked because the past was left ambiguous. However, this show tells the story of Gal and Don years before the events of the movie. There is a heist at the centre of the plot, but it moves so slowly, and the payoff at the end is very underwhelming.
Emun Elliott and James McArdle do their best as Don and Gal respectively, but the material just isn’t there for their roles to flourish. It often feels like a poor imitation of the roles made famous by Ben Kingsley and Ray Winstone.
Stephen Moyer is intriguing as the man behind the heist, but once again, isn’t given much to work with. It’s beyond me why this show was greenlit, and it would be a surprise if a second season followed it.
The standout scenes in the series are shared by McArdle and Sarah Greene as Dee Dee, as their relationship flourishes. But we know how it all ends up for them, which takes away from their storyline. Their relationship is played as a ‘Will they? Won’t they?’ storyline, but its impact is lessened, as we know they do.
Tamsin Grieg is having the most fun in the show as Don’s psycho sister, but the suggestion that she was behind the formation of Don just doesn’t seem convincing and disrespects the Legacy set up by Kingsley in the original movie. All in all, this adds up to a lacklustre prequel crime series.
