Servant – Season 4 Episode 4 “Boo” Recap & Review

Boo

Episode 4 of Servant starts on the eve of Halloween, with toilet paper all over the streets. Hey, that’s valuable 2020 tender right there! Inside the Turner household, Dorothy looks over old videos of her reporting days, where she used to be called the Queen of Halloween. Things have changed now though, and although Sean tries to convince her that they haven’t, they most certainly have.

While the house-helping sisters start sifting through the closets looking for a Halloween costume for Jericho (a pumpkin doesn’t get a great reaction from Dorothy so Sean decides on a lobster instead), Julian arrives and finds silly string and paper all over his car. He’s not happy, believing the holiday encourages mischief.

Leanne watches the CCTV cameras like a hawk, with her trusty dagger on her lap. She’s dead-set on the cult being close by and attacking some time soon. However, she intends to use her homeless group o dress up and strike first, weeding out those in the cult who will do her wrong.

Naturally, Leanne takes things too far on the night when she genuinely scares a couple of kids, dragging them into the house. When Toby shows up, Leanne allows him to tag along momentarily as she wanders down the street and tries to work out which ones are the cultists.

Leanne eventually finds herself confronted by a guy in a skull mask (the same one Toby had) who stalks her and eventually shows off a knife. Leanne is ready for them though but as she pushes him down and pulls his arm, snapping it in a very awkward and uncomfortable manner, it turns out it was just a kid messing about.

Suddenly, all the lights in the street begin flickering out and bursting, as Leanne appears to be behind this, cackling maniacaly. The strange man in a ghost outfit we’ve been seeing throughout the episode actually happens to be Uncle George. He presents himself to Roscoe in the alley and admits he’s worried that Leanne’s chaos is spreading and although “certain pieces are in place” (referring to the Turner family) he’s confident that Roscoe will be onboard to help.

Giggling to herself, Leanne heads back inside and tells Sean she loves Halloween. However, Sean has made his mind up over what to do and speaks to Dorothy in confidence that night, telling her he’s prepared to do whatever he can to get rid of Leanne.

The Episode Review

So it would appear that Leanne is some sort of agent of chaos and although the cult are the ones who have been made out to be the bad guys here, it could actually be a red herring and shown that Leanne is the true foe here.

However, the episode itself doesn’t actually have a whole lot of content. Sure, the Halloween theme is a nice touch but the actual story is starting to really slow down, which is telling given Servant has always had a problem with its pace. It would seem season 4 is unfortunately following suit.

As we gear up for the second half of this season, there’s plenty of drama to come and I’m sure there’s going to be a few more twists and turns along the way.

  1. I thought this episode was great, and for the first time made it seem like yes, the “cult” were actually the good guys, and Leann was the bad egg. Problem is, they made that such a strong implication that its probably still the opposite…and in the end she will save the day. Just my guess…

  2. Very slow and empty episode in a (so far) very SLOW season. Get on with it!

BTW, with all the power lines snapping and breaking, didn’t seem to impact any of the homes on that street. Sean didn’t notice either. No one in their house noticed.
