Yoo-na
Seoul Busters episode 7 starts with the focus being on Jung-hwan. Long before becoming a detective, Jung-hwan was an Olympic pistol shooter athlete. However, he lost the game in his last Olympic participation and hasn’t been the same. For some reason, he is now scared of shooting his firearm. His fear affects their latest case, as the culprit makes a run for it. Thankfully, his team comes through and catches the guy.
Through Joong-ryeok’s captivating story-telling abilities, we learn that Jung-hwan met his wife while practising for the Olympics. Sadly, his wife never qualified, but she won Jung-hwan’s heart.
At the moment, it seems things are tense in Jung-hwan’s house. His wife wants more for their family and feels Jung-hwan is not trying enough. When the team drops by for a housewarming party, they pick up on the tension.
Looking back at Jung-hwan’s life, he is a good father and husband, but life has been hard on him. The couple never intended on having four kids, but even after getting a vasectomy, Jung-hwan still managed to get his wife knocked up. Now, the financial strain is causing issues in the marriage and bringing up bitter wounds from the past.
As Jung-hwan struggles with his marital problems, the team gets a new case. A young girl, Yoo-na, gets kidnapped from the bus stop and the team moves quickly to solve the case. They first meet with the parents and learn the girl’s schedule. On that day, Yoo-na was supposed to be picked up by her uncle, but the bus ran late.
The uncle assumed the mom would pick the kid up, but she was late. No one saw much, as they assumed the man picking the girl up was her uncle. The family is distraught and wants answers as quickly as possible.
As the team investigates, they find a video from a dashcam showing someone dressed like the uncle picking the kid. Yu-bin believes the kid might have made a mistake because of cognitive distortion. She thought the man was her uncle and walked towards him, unaware of the danger. He also believes the kidnapper studied Yoo-na’s schedule and specifically targeted her.
The detectives return to Yoo-na’s home to question the parents further. The dad, Yong-jin, secretly tells Yu-bin and Min-seo that he has a YouTube expose channel that helps bait and switch victims. He wonders if the people he exposed targeted his daughter.
The team brings in all the people exposed by Yong-jin’s dad but finds no definitive lead. However, they find a man named Seo-hun suspicious.
As the team holds a brief at the end of the day, a mysterious woman drops by Yoo-n’s home with a cake. She claims she is doing a favour for an old man. It turns out that the kidnapper sent a ransom note through the cake. The woman draws a caricature sketch of the old man for the police. They realise that the man looks a lot like Seo-hun and bring him in for further questioning.
Seo-hun denies any association with the kidnapping. After looking through the ransom note, Yu-bin realises that Seo-hun is not their suspect. Seo-hun has red-green color blindness. This means he couldn’t have made the ransom note.
Joong-ryeok is not pleased to let their prime suspect leave, but he has no choice. Yu-bin sends the team home to get some rest and starts questioning if it was a man who took Yoo-na.
Meanwhile, Yoo-na’s parents get into an argument as the pressure gets to them. Yoo-jin receives a call from a reporter asking about the kidnapping. The parents fear that the media attention might have got their daughter killed.
The team starts suspecting Joong-ryeok of talking to the media, but he refutes their suspicions. The one who talked to a reporter is Seo-hun. As the media continues to run the story, the police chief calls Yu-bin and takes the team off the case. The episode ends with Yu-bin informing the team that a special investigation team will be taking over the case.
The Episode Review
The first half of the episode was funny as Joong-ryeok narrated Jung-hwan’s problems. The slap-stick comedy in this show is on another level and we love it. One can’t help but laugh, even though the circumstances are a tad bit sad.
The case for this week is a child kidnapping which affects Jung-hwan more than the other members. He is a father and can empathise with Yoo-na’s family. The team will need to hand over the case to the special investigation team, but will they willingly give up or secretly continue to investigate?
