The Fire

Seoul Busters episode 4 starts with a flashback to Joong-Ryeok’s boxing days. In this match, he was about to lose, but thanks to his coach’s encouragement and advice, he claimed victory.

Presently, Joong-Ryeok is outside a prison waiting for a gang leader to be released while casually chatting with the gang members about his glorious boxing days. Once the prisoner, Sang-su is released, Joong-Ryeok arrests him again on different charges. Sang-su tries to make a run for it, but the other team members easily capture him.

Meanwhile, Yu-bin meets with the police chief to catch up. Later, he runs into an old acquaintance who is curious about the police chief consistently relying on Yu-bin. He brings up an incident that happened to Yu-bin in America and questions if Yu-bin is in the country to catch the culprit.

Apparently, the guilty party snuck into Korea. What happened to Yu-bin in America? The two also talk about Yu-bin’s new team and their bad reputation. Still, Yu-bin defends his team and calls them charming.

Later that night, the team meets up for their first team dinner. They coincidentally visit Joong-Ryeok’s former coach’s chicken restaurant. Joong-Ryeok is surprised to learn his coach, Yoon retired and started a chicken restaurant while an old acquaintance, Tae-sung, runs a gym nearby.

The three men happily reunite and reminisce about their old days. Joong-Ryeok is even more surprised to see Coach Yoon’s daughter, Hyo-joo is all grown up now.

After the team dinner, Yu-bin begrudgingly pays even though he didn’t enjoy the chicken like the other members. They decide to take a group picture and Yu-bin is hesitant and hides his face. It seems like he is afraid of someone recognising him. Sadly, that seems to be a baseless worry, as a fire later breaks out in the restaurant.

The following morning, the team gets a call about the fire and rushes to the scene. As expected, Joong-Ryeok is troubled as this case hit close to home. The team quickly learns that Hyo-joo was injured in the fire and rushed to the hospital. Joong-Ryeok heads to the hospital and tries to comfort Coach Yoon.

In the meantime, Yu-bin and the firefighters try to find the cause of the fire. By the looks of it, it is probably arson. Someone went through the trouble of removing the CCTV cameras in the restaurant. Eun Gyeong also discovers that Hyo-joo was most likely attacked from behind causing a head injury and concussion.

The team starts the investigation of the possible suspects, and Joong-Ryeok takes offense when Coach Yoon is mentioned as a suspect. He lashes out at Jung-hwan, but Yu-bin insists that they can’t rule anyone out just yet. He asks Joong-Ryeok to keep his personal feelings out of the case.

At the same time, Tan-Sik finds footage from the nearest CCTV camera showing a suspicious man walking near the restaurant 30 minutes before the fire started.

Yu-bin tasks Tan-sik and Jung-wan to find out more about Hyo-joo’s activities on the day of the fire. He sends Min-seo to investigate more about the suspicious man and question the neighbouring business owners. Joong-Ryeok focuses on finding out more about Coach Yoon.

He visits Tae-sung’s gym and finds the part-timer who works at the restaurant. The young man saved Hyo-joo and is working hard to better his life. Joong-Ryeok is touched when he learns that the young man reminded Coach Yoon of him. It reminds him of how Coach Yoon kept him from giving up when he thought of quitting boxing before his time.

After a long day, Jung-hwan returns home to his family. His wife reminds him of their daughter’s upcoming birthday. The young girl wants a Tyrannosaurus rex figurine and Jung-hwan promises to get it for her.

Elsewhere, Yu-bin remembers meeting a beautiful woman on a rainy day. He has a picture of the woman on his desk. We can’t help but wonder if something happened to her and he is looking for the person who hurt her. Is she his wife or girlfriend? What happened to her?

The next day, Min-seo finally finds a clue about the suspicious man in the CCTV footage. The man turns out to be the owner of a chicken restaurant across from Coach Yoon’s restaurant. According to the neighbouring business owners, the two chicken restaurants had bad blood. However, the interview with the chicken restaurant leads to nowhere.

Contrary, Jung-hwan and Tan-sik talk to Hyo-joo’s friend and learn that the girls went to a party. After the party, Hyo-joo decided to study at the restaurant. Joong-Ryeok checks Hyo-joo’s phone data after it is restored and discovers she was looking into self-defense weapons and reporting a stalker.

The Episode Review

The episode gives us a look into Joong-Ryeok’s life as a boxing legend and the influence Coach Yoon had in his life. Coach Yoon helped Joong-Ryeok through a lot and, sadly, they reconnected only to face a crisis. It is no surprise that Joong-Ryeok is emotional about this case. However, if he can’t remain logical, he will put the team in a tough spot. Yu-bin is right to ask him to remain level-headed.

The episode still maintains the show’s comedy thanks to the entertaining plot and execution. I love that Dong-goo the little boy is always causing trouble at the station. It is fun to see him mess with the detectives and goof around. We also got a hint of mystery as we try to uncover why Yu-bin came back to Korea.

It is possible something happened to the woman he keeps remembering. However, it will take a few more episodes before we find out more. What are your theories?
