Crossfire
Episode 7 of Secret Level begins with another online MMO, this time in the form of Crossfire. The governor has declared a state of emergency, as a level 3 hurricane is inbound. Inside an abandoned apartment complex, a group, fronted by Cross, prepare to go after their targets.
This is a proper warzone and it doesn’t take long for fighting to break out. Both mercenary groups are divided in their beliefs, but similar in their overwhelming desire to do what’s right. Both sides believe they’re the greater good, which is a theme seen throughout the episode.
On the one side, Cross and his team find themselves under heavy fire, and on the highway, the soldiers on both sides sustain losses. A grenade blast obscures the visibility from Cross overlooking with his sniper, while Fitz and his team go on the offensive.
The package they’re after is in possession of a man called Mason. Now, the other mercenaries actually have a different objective, and that comes from securing their client and taking him to the border. This is led by Fitz and Layla.
Anyway, it doesn’t take long for Cross’ team to search through the CCTV and eventually narrow down their position to Regalia. The snipers are immediately turned, and Cross has his foes in his, well, crosshairs. At least for a bit.
When the car heads behind a large apartment building, he loses visual. However, the ground troops head in and a big car chase ensues. Eventually, all of this drama culminates in It does the trick and they find their target in a dock full of shipping containers.
The wind and rain blows in though, and while Cross is thrown over the railings and left for dead, at gunpoint Fitz is told not to kill him by Layla, reminding him that they’re not the bad guys.
Layla manages to complete her objective, getting her client to the border, and then heading back to the city.
The Episode Review
The animation in this episode is great and the photorealistic style definitely works well for this story. It’s interesting to see how the tale spins back and forth between the two sides, especially as it’s clear that the two mercenary groups are just ordinary soldiers following commands.
The constant utterance of “we’re not bad guys” feels a bit on the nose though. The theme in this is strong enough that it didn’t need to be repeated 3 or 4 times just to get that across, but there’s plenty of action along the way to whet the appetite.
