In the compelling psychological thriller Therapy, adapted from Sebastian Fitzek’s bestseller, Josy, the 13-year-old daughter of well-known psychiatrist Viktor Larenz, has vanished with no eyewitnesses, no evidence, and no dead body.
Viktor, Josy’s father, travels to a remote island to cope with his daughter’s death. Two years later, a stunning stranger pays him a visit there. Anna Spiegel is a writer with a peculiar form of schizophrenia that causes her to experience her fictional characters as real people. In her most recent work, a girl of unclear age and illness disappears without a trace.
After exhausting all other options, Viktor decides to become Anna’s therapist. She drives Viktor to his breaking point by making him confront the reality of his daughter’s disappearance. As the past is pulled towards the light, the meetings and their repercussions become increasingly horrific.
The German show is an excellent mixture of mystery and psychological horror, and it does a great job of introducing us to the show’s premise. What’s more, we’re invested in the show’s characters from the beginning, owing to their mysterious demeanor, and given that, we want to know more about their motivations and predicaments.
The show slowly delves deeper into the plot, which grows more chilling as it progresses. The line between reality and insanity blurs so much by this point, especially towards the end of the season, that it gets difficult to know if what’s happening is real or just part of Viktor’s hallucination. Having said that, the revelations in the show are rather predictable, though. The reveals won’t surprise fans of psychological thrillers much. However, the show’s approach and creative choices are admirable nonetheless.
Additionally, there is a significant plot hole in the finale episode, one that’s not immediately obvious, but undermines the credibility of the show.
The stunning scenery and fantastic cinematography in the show are worth praising. The imaginary timeline’s depiction of the natural landscape on the island is simply breathtaking. Additionally, it fits in wonderfully with the narrative. The show’s dark undercurrents are further reflected perfectly in the grayscale color palette of the show.
The show is thrilling and entertaining, despite some predictability in the story’s revelations. The plot is well-structured and executed. The storyline, character arcs, cinematography, and performances all make this show worth watching.
