Rosemary’s Baby Plot Summary
Rosemary Woodhouse is married to Guy Woodhouse, an aspiring actor. When they move into Bramford, Rosemary meets Terry, a former drug addict who was rehabilitated by the Castevets, their next-door neighbors.
One evening, while returning from dinner at the home of Edward Hutch, a close friend of Rosemary’s, they discover Terry’s blood-covered body. The police inform them that Terry’s death is ruled a suicide, given her history of drug addiction.
After Terry’s death, Rosemary and Guy decide to move to Bramford and start a new life, not knowing that this is going to be Rosemary’s biggest mistake.
Who are Rosemary’s neighbors?
After moving into Bramford, Rosemary notices the overly friendly nature of the Castevets and other neighbors. When Minnie Castevet visits Rosemary for the first time, Rosemary mentions that they are trying to have a baby. Following this, Minnie invites them to dinner. Although Guy is initially hesitant, he eventually agrees to go. During the dinner, Guy converses with Roman Castevet about the theater world and finds himself drawn to him.
Guy grows fond of the Castevets and plans to visit Roman Castevet to hear more of his stories. However, on another evening, Rosemary hesitates to see Minnie, so Guy advises her to stay home. But as soon as Guy leaves to see Roman, Minnie unexpectedly arrives at Rosemary’s place with Grace, another neighbor. It’s during this visit that Minnie gives Rosemary a locket containing “Tannis Root,” which belonged to Terry.
When Guy returns home, Rosemary shows him the pendant. Despite some initial concerns, their life continues peacefully. However, Rosemary notices Guy becoming increasingly absorbed in his acting career. When she confronts him about this, Guy makes genuine efforts to try for a baby and even marks the best days for conception. At the same time, the couple occasionally hears ritualistic chanting from their neighbors, but they choose to ignore it.
Why did Rosemary faint?
When it’s time for their final attempt of the month, Guy and Rosemary plan a lovely dinner and prepare to try for a baby. During dinner, Minnie Castevet brings chocolate mousse for the couple. Rosemary takes a bite but complains about its chalky aftertaste. However, Guy ignores her complaints and insists that the mousse is delicious.
After eating a bit more, Rosemary excuses herself to the restroom and secretly throws all the mousse. Shortly after, she faints. That same night, Rosemary has a disturbing dream about a ritualistic practice where she is being raped by something inhuman.
When she wakes up, she asks Guy about why she’s naked, but he rejects her concerns. Guy says that he didn’t want to miss the date. Despite feeling confused and noticing scratches on her back, Rosemary’s anger fades when she discovers that she’s pregnant.
Why does Rosemary switch doctors?
After visiting Dr. C.C. Hill, the doctor who delivered her sisters’ babies, Rosemary informs her husband about her pregnancy. Although Rosemary is skeptical, Guy wants to share the news with the Castevets. Minnie wastes no time suggesting that Rosemary switch doctors and recommends Dr. Abraham Saperstein instead.
When Rosemary visits Dr. Saperstein, he immediately tells her to stop taking her multivitamin pills and demands she only drink a special milk made by Mrs. Castevet. Rosemary agrees, and life continues the same for a few months. Soon, Rosemary begins to lose a lot of weight and also starts to hate the way she looks in the mirror. Not to mention, she experiences shooting pains in her abdomen. When she goes to Dr. Saperstein for help, he says it is completely normal, and the pain will soon pass.
Rosemary stops drinking Minnie’s concoction and makes her own vitamin drink. During a party, Rosemary’s friends advise her to get checked by a different doctor. This sends both Rosemary and Guy into a heated argument, but suddenly, the pain stops, and Rosemary feels the baby move.
What Happens to Hutch?
After a few months, Rosemary receives a visit from Hutch, her old friend. He immediately notices her sudden weight loss during pregnancy, which he finds abnormal. Rosemary assures Hutch that her doctor considers it normal. However, when Hutch arrives at Rosemary’s house, Roman Castevet also pays a visit.
Hutch becomes curious about the tannis root in Rosemary’s locket as it smells strange. Roman explains its use, but Hutch doesn’t play into his lies and plans to dig further. Rosemary and Hutch plan to meet again the next day, but Hutch never shows up. Rosemary later learns that Hutch is in a coma.
What does Rosemary find out about Roman?
Hutch stays in a coma for several months before passing away, leaving a book for Rosemary. She receives the book at Hutch’s funeral. During the funeral, Hutch’s wife tells Rosemary that the book’s title appears to be jumbled.
Upon rearranging the title from “All of Them Witches” to “They Come with the Fall,” Rosemary becomes very suspicious, especially since her baby is due in June. As she learns more about the book, she finds that Roman Castevet is the son of Adrian Marcato, the Satanist who once lived in Bramford.
Rosemary gets concerned and tells her husband all this. Guy initially brushes things off by saying that it is just a coincidence but later accepts the same. Rosemary even visits Dr. Saperstein and asks him if he knows the truth.
Dr. Saperstein denies having any knowledge of this and assures Rosemary that Roman is on his deathbed and will leave the city soon. The Castevets leave the city, and Rosemary finally takes a sigh of relief.
What happens to Rosemary’s Baby?
Rosemary asks Guy about the book from Hutch and finds out Guy threw it away. On the same day, she tosses out the locket from Minnie’s and goes to a library to get more books about witches and satanic groups. As she reads, she realizes the coven needs a possession for their spell.
Rosemary contacts Donald Baumgart, the actor who went blind and helped Guy’s career. She discovers Guy is part of the coven and quickly leaves home with some luggage. At Dr. Saperstein’s office, she realizes Guy is also a Satanist while talking to his receptionist. She hurries out and goes to Dr. Hill. He promises to help, but instead, he calls Dr. Saperstein and Guy.
Just when Rosemary thinks she’s escaped, she’s caught by the coven again. They take her back to Bramford, and she gives birth. When she wakes up, she’s told the baby died. But she’s sure her baby is alive!
Is Rosemary’s Baby dead?
When Rosemary becomes suspicious, she stops taking her pills. One day, she visits a hall where everyone celebrates a baby’s arrival. When she sees her newborn baby, she’s terrified because his eyes aren’t normal.
When Rosemary asks, Roman Castevet replies that his eyes are like his father’s. That’s when she realizes her own child is the spawn of Satan himself! The baby starts crying loudly, and Rosemary can’t help but swing the cradle of her baby. The movie ends with Rosemary looking at her child with love.
