The Case of the Observatory Murder (Part 3)
Episode 9 of Ron Kamonohashi’s Forbidden Deductions begins with us seeing everyone assembled in the dome room. Isshiki says that the culprit will be arrested soon. He begins to explain the happening in detail. He and Ron saw Grizzly from the window of their room. That is why they went to him instead of the source of the noise, i.e. the rooftop. Someone else followed Grizzly too to hide the fact that they were on the rooftop with Grizzly. He points Jumonji as the culprit.
Jumonji jumps to defend himself and says that he thought the gunshot came from the outside. He asks Ishhiki about Onodera’s murder. Ishhiki proceeds to explain how that happened as well. Jumonji pretended to go to his room during the viewing party. He sneaked up on Onodera and gave her sleeping medication. He took her to the dome room where the lights were already shot and an unconscious Ron was also lying. He planted the gun and the master key on Ron. He then glued the doors shut from the outside.
Onodera was given a lighter dose than Ron. She woke up in the dark room, but the lights won’t turn on. The doors were glued shut but were unlocked from the inside. So her attempt to open them would instead lock the glued doors from the inside.
The fishing line was used to pull the gun’s trigger. One end of the line was tied to the top of the telescope and the other to the gun which was secured inside an air vent. When Onodera went to open the dome, the telescope’s movement triggered the gun and Onodera was shot dead.
Jumonji protests that the gun was next to Ron and not in the vent. Isshiki says that that gun was a replica from the lobby whereas the real one was retrieved by Jumonji amidst the chaos after Onodera’s death. That same gun was used to kill Grizzly as well.
Jumonji asks Isshiki what he thinks could be the reason for Jumonji killing the people. Isshiki says that Jumonji had asked Ms Unno to get the flashlights before everyone entered the dome room. This means that he knew beforehand that the lights inside won’t work. Jumonji drops his act. He accepts the crimes. He says that Onodera only pretended to be a photographer. She was in fact a journalist specialising in unsolved cases who was looking to dig up the case from ten years ago.
During the viewing party, Onodera’s excuse to go to her room was to actually rummage through Jumonji’s belongings. Jumonji killing Onodera must mean that he has something to hide. The gun is the same one from ten years ago. His father had killed everyone and then killed himself. Jumonji was first to arrive on the scene so he concealed the crime. He killed Grizzly because he took interest in solving Onodera’s murder.
Just then, Ron goes into a trance and commands Jumonji to kill himself. Isshiki throws Ron off balance but Jumonji ingests a pill to commit suicide. Ron rushes to Jumonji and asks who ordered Jumonji to trap Ron. Jumonji says that Ron is a mere puppet in that person’s hand. Jumonji’s last words are “Night turns to dawn” and he dies. The pill is suspected to be potassium cyanide owing to the almond-like smell.
It is soon dawn and Isshiki contacts the local police. Ron is still next to Jumonji’s body and ruminates over who it could be to set up Ron in such a way. He opens the dome and is shocked by something he sees on the floor. The police soon arrive and take over the crime scene.
We see an older police officer with a birth mark on his cheekbone. Isshiki takes Orihime’s statement and Orihime applauds Isshiki’s work. She calls him a star of the first magnitude and he is flattered. The police soon leave with the bodies and the guests are allowed to leave as well.
Ron expresses his regrets over Grizzly’s death and a loss of a good mentor. He reminds Isshiki about Ron’s pledge to be done with sleuthing. He dismisses the pledge now. He says that it is not a coincidence for Bloody Training incident and the observatory murders to follow a same pattern. He also shows the floor where Onodera’s body lay. The mark on the floor resembles the one on Ron’s neck. This is what Ron saw earlier after the morning light shone into the dome room.
The mark was already painted in red ink on the floor before Onodera’s murder but it was missed due to no lighting. Ron says that he only began pressurising the culprits to die after the Bloody Training incident. He also got the scar then which means that he was really framed by someone. That someone could very well be the person that Jumonji mentioned.
Ron vows to comeback to sleuthing. That person stole five years from Ron and purposely set up the murders to bring Ron back to sleuthing. It is no less a challenge to Ron and his intellectual capabilities. The person is playing games with Ron which he considers to be the greatest humiliation of his life. He vows to never forgive the person.
The scene cuts to the police boat. The older policeman from earlier is standing next to the body bags. Jumonji unzips the bag and gets up. He had only faked his death. He thanks the older policeman for his help.
The older policeman applauds Jumonji’s acting on behalf of the family. Jumonji’s next words reveal that it was the family who reached out to him when Onodera began to dig into the case. Jumonji expresses his astonishment to find that the House of M truly exists.
House of M are the apex in the criminal underworld. Jumonji also addresses the older policeman as one of the members of the family. He goes on to give a brief background about the House of M. The older policeman asks Jumonji about Ron and as he is speaking about Ron’s murderous and pressurising gaze, the older policeman shoots him point blank range. He then takes off his mask and rings up his brother.
The person underneath the mask is a young man. The young fellow relays the information about Ron to his brother, saying that he saw Ron for the first time and does not care that he is the sixth generation of their enemy detective’s family. The brother adds that Ron is also a ninth generation member of another family. He asks if Ron got the message and the young fellow says that Ron is unaware of its meaning. The brother mentions that he will soon come to appreciate family as the blood of both Sherlock Holmes and James Moriarty runs in Ron’s veins after all.
Back at the observatory, Ron’s mood changes and he begins hula hooping again. He asks Isshiki if he’ll continue to help and he promptly agrees. Ron presents a can of black sugar syrup to Isshiki to give to Amamiya but Isshiki declines.
