Frankfurter Sandwich

In Reservation Dogs Season 3 Episode 6, Cheese plays virtual reality zombie-killing video games in his room. Apparently, it’s all he’s been doing for a week. When Willie Jack, Bear, and Elora try to see him, he sends Irene with an excuse. But Irene is done with Cheese hiding away in his room. She calls on Bucky, Brownie, and Big to get him out of the house.

The men take Cheese to woods where they arm him with a machete to cut through the bush. They go fishing and camping, all while trying to give Cheese new perspectives through which to view life.

Brownie advises him to feel the dirt by his feet and understand that he’s part of this special land. Big takes him deeper into the forest to look for BigFoot, insisting to Cheese that just because you haven’t seen something doesn’t mean it’s not real. Cheese confesses to the elders that he’s worried his friends, who are older than him, are going to leave him–just like everyone else. And he’s been pushing them away before they can.

But later, when Cheese suggests they play a talking game he learned at the boys’ home, it’s the elders’ turn to confess their feelings. Big admits the sadness and guilt he feels over losing friends in the motorcycle crash he couldn’t stop. Bucky and Brownie then open up about Maximus, and how they lost him as a friend because they weren’t there for him when he needed them.

As the men cry, Cheese assures them he won’t be like Maximus. He won’t drift away, because he has them, and Irene, and his friends. With this lesson learned, he calls Elora, Bear, and Willie Jack to join them in watching the sunset.

The Episode Review

What a touching example of how this community raises its own. Cheese’s family is his entire community: the Rez Dogs, Irene, the elders who took him camping. As Bucky would say, “these are bonds you don’t want to break.”

I think it’s lovely that after the men lost Maximus due to not believing him, Bucky and Brownie befriended Big with his tales of BigFoot and Deer Lady. They have changed, and it’s a good sign for the Rez Dogs to be growing in positive directions as well. Now–is there still hope for Maximus to be reunited with his family? I really hope so.
