Maximus
In Reservation Dogs Season 3 Episode 2, Bear continues his aimless walking, but he’s not sure how much longer he can go on without food or water. After a run-in with the spirit of a Spanish Conquistador, he’s so upset William Knifeman got him into this mess that he insults the spirit warrior.
He’s then taken down by a tranquilizer dart and wakes up in a house in the middle of nowhere. An older Indigenous man named Maximus, also from Okern, gives him water. He worries that Bear’s presence means that “they” have found him.
It’s soon clear that Maximus is a conspiracy theorist. He shows Bear the eggplants he’s growing in his greenhouse to feed the “Star People” upon their return. He thinks Bear is like him in that he can see things other people can’t. One difference is that Bear’s friends believe him. Maximus’ friends from Okern did not, which led him to become institutionalized. He implies that Bear should count himself lucky.
Although Bear is scared of Maximus at first, he grows to like him and relate to him. But their time together is cut short when cops and social workers arrive to take Maximus back to an institution. Before he goes out to greet them with eggplants (he must believe they are the Star People), Bear tells him he believes him. “Good,” Maximus responds, then urges him to go back home to his people.
Bear travels through a tunnel to get to the highway. Once again, he starts walking, but this time with a purpose.
The Episode Review
Who ever expected a run-in with a conspiracy theorist to turn out to be so quietly beautiful? Graham Greene adds to the series’ reputation for having stellar guest stars, and this appearance especially hits you right in the heart.
Side note: This really is going to be Dallas Goldtooth’s season, isn’t it? His many appearances so far as the spirit warrior always frame episodes with both humor and meaning. I’m looking forward to seeing more of him and his influence on Bear.
Both the spirit warrior and Maximus are nudging Bear to keep his eyes to the past, but is it a lesson he’ll be able to carry with him?
